Male playing Female.
No, I don't need a reason why.
What Gender Will You Play vs. What Gender You Are. Why?

I always play through both, to cover all the bases.

Male playing female, because thats what my ME1 character was, and its better to stare at a chick for 40 hours opposed to a guy, and i think Jennifer Hale did a better VO job

Male playing female, if there are F/F romances. I really like F/F romances. Like... really. Otherwise, it's a coin toss, what I feel like at the moment. Playing male it's easier to relate, but playing as female it's more interesting from the RP point of view.

Pfft Handheld plays neither gender as Handheld himself is to advanced for gender and Has evolved to the point where he can Brain f*** everyone.
Take that society and your generalisations.

Male playing female, as almost always. Usually I do a male playthrough later on, to see if there is something you miss as a female PC, but that's about it.

I have a canonical Male and Female character for ME. Although I tend to play female characters more often, because there aren't m/m options. And yes I'm a male.

Going to play female Shep first and then male one.

I've always played a male character first but this time I think I'm gonna play a female first. But anyway, I always play both genders... and I'm male.

Male playing female: looks better, more fun, less cliched (in my opinion) than Maleshep (haven't yet managed to finish a single playthrough as Maleshep although I have 4 Femsheps between levels 49 and 60).

It seems the ratio of male playing female:male playing male is about 20%-30% higher than female playing male:female playing female.
Interesting...

I have 5 Male Sheps, and 2 female. Though one of the female Sheps is my wife's only play through. I may take her through a second game to prepare for all options in ME2.

Male.
My first play-through will be with a female. For some reason I find it fascinating to kick ass with a female character, and breaking all those gender barriers.
Maybe it's because I'm attracted to strong females in real-life?
I played a female warrior in Dragon Age first too, then afterwards a scrawny male wizard. Hmm.
Anyway, it's simply social conventions, and I guess I get a kick from defying them in computer games.

The results are pretty surprising, with more men playing women than I would have anticipated it would seem.
Many variables have come into play however, such as:
Jennifer Hale's acting
Mark Meer's debatable wooden dialogue
Not wanting to look at a male ass for 60+ hours.
But let us see how high we can actually get, to see how everyone will be really playing!
note: I apologize for the lack of a "Both" option, but i was mainly talking about that FIRST playthrough and wasn't thinking about that!

60+ hours? You'd have to toggle walk through the entire game and consider every conversation option for 30 sec for ME1 to last that long.

Female playing male. I can't play a female Shepard to save my life, even though I'm tempted because of the romance options.
