I wonder if they were thinking of the European Jewish ghettoes when they wrote the Elven alienage. I see some similarites -- a minority group largely restricted to a certain quarter of the city, where they keep their traditions alive.

I don't think you should narrow it to Jeweish alienation, as the background of the elves is rather different.

They were the proud owners of the land before being defeated and enslaved. Jewish history starts with a nomadic culture which took them to Europe, therefore that wasn't their original land, and the resistance they faced was triggered by different issues.

In a sense, the Elves could be the NA Indians.

I don't think you'd be able to nail it down to the alienage being modeled after a particular minority group at a certain time in our (world) history. There've been, and continue to be, such areas throughout the world. Most likely it's an amalgamation of any and all.

Which is why you'll find a lot of people noticing similarities based on their own knowledge or experience; each may be right for their part.

Well, I think a lot of people draw the parallel between Dragon Age Elves and the Jewish people. It has been brought up a few times in other threads.

And the alienage is not simply a slum but far more like a ghetto. Very important detail: it can be locked down by the guards.

A slum would have grown and expanded outside the city walls. The alienages on the other hand remain controlled in size, contained within their boundaries.

Now historicaly medieval towns did have foreign quarters. This is not too strange and not always a preplanned occurance - in modern day cities we still see neighbourhoods that have a dominant national/ethnic minority.

But the city elves have been part of the human lands for hundrets of years. They are not a handful of surface dwarf traders who chose to live close to eachother in a foreign world. So yes, the walled in area reserved for the elven populace is a ghetto with that meaning of the word and not simply a poor neighbourhood.

You could make the comparison between the Elves and: the Jewish Ghetto, NA native reservations, the Palestinians in Israel, the indigenous South Africans under aparthied, the helots in Sparta, Anglo-Saxon serfs under the Normans... Unfortunately it's something that happens far too often in our history to draw a single comparison.

The first time I read this, I thought you wrote "the waffle ss."

Why do you have to compare that to the jewish ghetto? Anyway, this is bitter and please stop with the implied bigotry. It is a slum, a ghetto, no way similar to the jewish ghettos of world war 2.

I'm not Jewish and I resent the comment on "implied bigotry." There are a lot of historical parallels in this game, and I thought this possible was one of them. OK? And the ghettoes existed a long time before WWII, or didn't you know that before posting?

it does resemble a jewish comunnity but it also resembles other ethnicities and such that have had very similar things happen to them in the past only reason you recognize it (through no fault of your own) as jewish is because thats the most known due to WW2

The medieval Jewish ghettos were the original inspiration behind the alienages, yes. It grew to encompass other things, of course, but all of Thedas started as a fictionalized version of European history, so that is indeed where it began.

The first half of the movie was pretty good. The ending was terrible. I was expecting a bad end though because I heard Tarantino had some difficulty coming up with an ending.

Look, other posters have noted different and valid historical comparisons without resorting to personal attacks. You are the only one who got all butthurt about it.

+1 to this.  I personally don't agree with the OP all that much, but crying because he used -Jewish- ghetto instead of a generic one (which isn't the same thing) is pretty sad, man.   I didn't hear you screaming when the Elves were compared to American Indians, or the Japanese, or "Everyone America has ever wronged"  (that's a real thread) or America, etc, etc, etc.....

Get over it.

Err... let's not forget that there were Jewish ghettos in medieval times. That's what they were called. Unless someone seriously wishes to advocate that the word "Jewish" is a problem, let's keep the overreaction to a minimum, shall we?

Seeing as I've already posted this fact in the past, and I don't see why it would suddenly be a problem now, I really doubt it. Am I missing something?

What? People think that proper name for a generalized group is offensive to someone else? That NEVER happens. <_<
