Honestly, I liked the way things worked in ME so far and wouldn't change it. I think it's the most immersive system they have. You play Shepard. Apart from that one scene with Joker in ME2, you see everything from his/her perspective and that makes me identify with the character a lot (hence the impact of the NPCs).
In combat, you are also Shepard, you play this character directly and you can give orders to your team. I think this worked perfectly for an RPG.
I always found it extremely weird in KotOR and Dragon Age, if in combat, I suddenly jump out of my character and give orders to it just as I do to the NPCs in my group. Never liked that.
Mass Effects mechanics are the best I have seen in an RPG so far when it comes to immersion (which for me is the most important aspect of the interface). I hope they keep it that way.

It would be a good idea for people who don't like playing MP and doing multiple rerolls. I vote yes.

I vote yes. But with a caveat. I think the primary story should be driven by the primary character (like Shepard). But give us a multiplayer enabled campaign where my friends can jump in and control squad mates. Kind of like Gears of War. The main character is Marcus - the story is told through him. But a friend can jump in as Dom in my campaign for a while. Then when the leave, the squad mate is controlled by AI again.

I always enjoyed it in the old military games like Conflict Desert Storm, switching between my four man squad. GTA V look like it will bring in some nice character swapping too.

I'm down for it, if the story allows it.

yes something like kotor and Dragon Age like if Shepard dies and let say garrus and James are alive you have to restart from last checkpoint just because Shepard died and in reality why can't my squad mates use medi gel to revive Shepard what only Shepard can hold on to the medi gel.

if they do it like dragon age, sure, that would be cool.

No.

Very nice post, enlightening, full of reasons and all that...

Knights of the old Republic had this, was bit surprised that Mass Effect didn't.

If that was in mass effect I would play as Garrus all the time
