Anyone recommend a good space simulation game? Akin to Settlers, Age of Empires, Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Roller Coaster Tycoon etc.

What about X3 series, Sins of Solar series, endless space, universe at war earth assault and universe sandbox ?

Forgot to menton my laptop is, quite ****. Do I need a good computer to play them?

No they work on quite sh*ttty pc's, you should be fine.

My laptop can finally run Doom 3 max, with minimal stutter in shadow heavy areas and particle effects covering your screen.

I can't even have dynamic shadows on Half Life 2. Just the boring static ones.

Yeah but sins of solar rebellion is the newest and most demanding of these games and you can play it on minimum as low as a 256mb gpu and 2,2 intel pentium 4 and you shouldn't have problem with that.

Out of all them, which would you recommend? With deep mechanics like Rome: Total War? City building, modifying, taxing, keeping the people happy and prevent riots?

I really like sins of solar empire and rebellion, great games and my favourite out of these, X3 is pretty deep too, endless space is a good indie title and universe sandbox is more simulation.

You should note, naughty Bear, that space strategy games like you're talking about (not space sims, a space sim would be X) don't really offer city building and very involved population control. Because it's a larger scale, naturally the smaller things are on the scale of planets, rather than individual cities. For Sins or Endless Space anyway.

X is a space sim that's totally just about you flying a space ship between places. Some trading (and combat), but no city-building or anything like that at all. Probably not what you're looking for.

Well i like management games, as long as it is deep.

Best comparison I can make is Rome: Total War with keeping the population happy, but I want it to be more diverse and more deeper than building sewers or exterminating the population to keep them happy.

I also like the diplomats where you can make others become a protectorate, trade map information, give regions etc.

Roller Coaster Tycooon has you managing profits, keeping the guests happy, creating good roller coasters that aren't to big to scare customers or too much run.

Or Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Settlers, Age of Empires etc. I want a good mix of all them, any setting really but space preferably.

Oh and does Steam do demos?

Man, just getting on their server is a problem at the moment. But aside from that, I can't make a purchase even when I DO get on there. All I get is a message:

"An unexpected error has occurred. Your purchase has not been completed."

Multiple credit cards and paypal hasn't worked. Issued a support ticket two days ago (when it first happened), but seeing as the summer sale is on I highly doubt I'll hear a reply back in time for many of the purchases I want. I can't even add funds to my wallet.

Anyone played Endless Space? I'm tempted to add it to my day 1 haul of Bioshock: Infinite, GRID 2 amd Scribblenauts Unlimited, but I'd like some opinions first.

Geez, I wish I was as lucky as you.  This is incredibly frustrating, watching these sales go by and their lackluster support is taking so long getting back to me.

You're not the only one who's trying to get in. I don't blame steam, every broke college nerd with a dollar to spare has at least SOME chance on getting a new game.

I just bought Theif 2 and Afterfall for 5 euroes.

And the best thing is, there's no limit! It's not like Skyrim will "sell out" xD

There is one VERY similar with "Nile" on the title. It was about Cleopatra though. It's basically the carbon copy of Pharoah methinks.

My problem had nothing to do with the overload on their servers and has
been ongoing for three days now.  I got fed up of waiting for a response
from support, so I uninstalled and reinstalled steam and it works now.
Ironically, at the exact same time I was doing this, I got a response
from support....

I voted for Dishonored. Only one of the options I don't already have.

I'll probably get XCOM and maybe The Cave or something else.

Looks like Borderlands 2 won.  So anyone looking for that, you have 7 hours left to get at 66% off ($10.19).  I thought we were voting for a flash sale item, but it looks like it's actually a separate community choice option.

Next ones for the community to choose:
Saint's Row: The Third => R$ 8,75 (that must be 3-4 dollars, no clue)
Mass Effect 2 => R$ 10,50 (maybe 5-6 bucks)
KOTOR 2 => R$ 6,80 (possibly 3 bucks)

I have crap luck at this community choice thing. First, Dishonored was passed up for Borderlands 2, then ME2 was passed up for Saint's Row.

Here's hoping for GTA IV this time around!
