I think a Mass Effect movie should be two things if it is to work:-

1) Accurate to the current lore. I don't want to see Michael Bay or J.J. Abrams' "vision of" Mass Effect, I want to see Mass Effect as it is and always should be. No changes because the director envisions "something better" and all that rubbish. Remain true to the source material or don't bother. Recent movies don't give me confidence, though Mass Effect may be safer because it is still very much a current IP.

2) Don't base the movie on the game directly. Make a Mass Effect movie based on the First Contact War or something else. Basing it on the game is pointless and kind of backwards (Mass Effect took the idea of interactive cinema in leaps and bounds... taking away that freedom is counter to that and senseless).

I'd also like that they get Drew involved, and have Casey as a major voice as an executive producer/producer at least. And if they insist on doing a movie based on the game, at least cast it right. Keith David and Seth Green could easily play their respective roles live-action for instance.

My thoughts are the EXACT opposite of yours. If they make a movie I want it to be a new take on Shepard's adventure that captures the essence of the Mass Effect story and not some canon/lore tie-in/spin-off. The best adaptations aren't slavishly faithful to the original work.

as much as i would like to see a live action movie happen id prefer an animated film anyday honestly... how would wrex look for a live action film cgi or a guy in a costume?

There are way stranger looking aliens in movies...Mass Effect has a very "realistic" visual style so it's not like making a live-action Mario movie.

i know but knowing hollywood they f up the whole thing. now if bioware took this idea to ILM than maybe ill be for it. ILM did all the star wars digital charachters so if anyone should do any cgi for this film its them

Well it depends of we're looking at a big budget Hollywood pic or a Uwe Boll B-Movie. Pretty much all past vg movies have been the latter but Hollywood is pretty desperate for ideas now.

NO!!!!!
No movie! Please don’t make a movie!!!

A movie would be SO bad. Look at all game to movie conversations and tell me if any are ever true to the game or any good.

They’ll use far too much CGI and turn the thing into a cartoon, like Star wars episode 1!!
What ever you do, please use puppets /animatronics but not crap cartoons.

I feel the best thing to do would be a TV series based on the Mass Effect universe.
They could make a long pilot episode first then if its successful enough a whole 24 part (Just like BSG did).

And make sure it’s good, like star trek was, or serenity (even though that was dumped it was still amazing, and if it wasn’t good, why’d they make a feature length movie to finish it off?) and not crap like so many other of the SciFi cannels tripe.
A series based on the Alliance Navy and mankind’s integration in to the community would be ace.
The general plot could run alongside Sheppard’s story, seen through the eyes of a bunch of recruits.
They could even try and get the actor / model Mark Vanderloo who the iconic Sheppard’s face was based on to do a cameo or something.

But please, not a film based on the actual games, it would discredit the whole saga.
Im so worried about this, this could be oh so good, but it could also be SO dreadfull..

An Original Story with only the Mass Effect IP lore. Not technically a Mass Effect movie, just a movie set in Mass Effect's Galaxy.

Something about the First Contact War and Humanity's entrance into the Galactic Arena (Well before the Shepard stuff) would be pretty win.

This will never happen. Most of the appeal of the franchise is the characters, and no filmmaker is going to spend money on the IP without taking advantage of everything it offers.

Adaptations are getting a lot better. Iron Man, Star Trek and Watchmen are good examples. Resident Evil was decent. Ten years ago, you would be at a loss to point out a good comic book movie that was faithful to the source material. Thirty years ago you could say the same thing about book movies. Someone will be the first to create a good videogame movie. I don't know if it will Mass Effect, but it very well could be, seeing as the game is already pretty cinematic.

Compressing ME to a film is pretty easy, as MOST of the content of the game doesn't contribute towards the story unless you mention it. Most of the missions are optional to the main storyline: stopping Saren.  Go to your mission screen in Mass Effect... very little of the action falls under that drop down menu. That's all a movie would have to fit in 2 hours, and just give nods to the rest.

Same with ME2, cut out all the loyalty missions and cut the recruitment missions to their last fights, and what do you have? A Two hour movie.

Not saying it has to happen, but it certainly could, and could work well.

I think the only way to make sure this works, and that the fans like it, is to recruit one of us.

In fact, I selflessly put myself forward to work on this project in a sort of QA role.
I know, I’m a saint.  I wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything I wasn’t prepared to do myself so...BioWare, drop me a line when you’re ready to fly me out there.

PS.  I’ll even take one for the team and wear an N7 Hoodie and cap every day on set.

As much as I want to see a Mass Effect movie, it is probably too much to hope for. Being realistic, there isn't enough interest in the first contact war, nor is there enough interest in rachni vs krogan, or krogan vs salarian wars. And I doubt they would cover Jump Zero, and instead would cover the Citadel since that is a main backdrop of the entire universe. It is the lynchpin.

I think they could make a movie based on a special task research team. This team initially starts out as investigators and researchers of Sovereign after it was destroyed. They could be sent to study other "Prothean" artifacts on strange worlds and the Geth would be after too. They could also investigate the keepers and collectors. Maybe they could investigate why reapers need inorganic and organic material to be built. Are they cyborg like beings? And maybe there is a big suprise. The Reapers or Geth have Spies in this team. Or maybe there is a possessed Turian on the coucil who is being controlled by the Reapers and he is always saying to them "Ah yes Reapers" and getting in their way of research and blocking anyone trying to prevent the return of the Reapers.

I think a movie about Jon Grissom (being the first human to go through a mass relay, and subsequent involvment in the first contact war) has the potential to be a decent prequel to the games myself.

Yup.

Also if they do it I hope it has nothing to do with the games itself. Maybe something along the lines of introducing humans finding the ruins on mars and the first contact wars could be interesting.
We allready have Mass Effect 1 theres no point to attempt to rehash that plot in 90 minutes.

2 things are needed for someone decent to step forward and make a great movie based on the Mass Effect universe... and one of these things has already happened.

1. A good, alien-friendly, sci-fi movie that proves that great sci-fi movies can be made (again, after so long without decent ones), and James Cameron already did that with Avatar

2. A great movie based on a video game, which i´m hoping will be made soon. (Prince of Percia maybe? I personally don´t know a lot about the Prince of Percia universe, but I remember playing a little bit of the first one, and I think it might be hard to make a movie based on this game that anyone will take seriously)

.

If those two conditions are met, chances for a decent Mass Effect movie would be significantly increased.

Hollywood would start looking for the best video game universes available and get some talented people working on film adaptions of them. Those movies would have a lot more budget than most video-game-based movies have gotten before and that ofcourse means better visuals, actors, directors and writers.

And also...

Although it´s a bit risky to make a movie that follows Commander Shepard, the story must at least (MINOR SPOILER) have something to do with the Reapers. I mean, what is the Mass Effect universe without them? And although the First Contact War might be a good idea for a movie, it has little to do with the Reapers. Therefor, The FCW is probably not a decent enough idea for a Mass Effect movie (unless they are going to make a sequel set a few decades after the FCW, after the Reaper threat has been confirmed)

to be honest if a movie is based off of a game series, it shouldn't entirely be. What i mean by that is they should make their own story with the same universe, lore, etc. Because imo watching a movie based off the storyline of a game would be like watching what u've already done except how somebody else would do it....

Oh god, if they do make a movie (and it follows Shep), I hope Shepard will be female.

I'm guessing if they do make a movie, Shepard will be a guy. Personally I think that having a FemShep would be more interesting for the storyline. And it will feed the ME fangirls. *_*

It could work but i just cant see it happening.

You couldn't really base it on the storyline of the game seeing as large portions of the story are left up to the player. it'd be very controversial to choose a single storyline.

The other option would be to choose or create something outside the Mass effect trilogy plot but these kind of sci-fi movies tend to demand big elaborate plots. I doubt you could get something worthy of a directors attention from earlier in the timeline.

Just toss in Dane Cook as Shepard and we're good!

Just kidding, it would be better to create an original story but toss in elements of the original plot. Think Iron Man 2 on this one. The conflict would still be against the Reapers, but without the Collectors or Saren, so it would be easier to condense the film into 2-3 hours.

Josh Brolin as Grissom, and I'm at the theatre.

I'd have to agree on most of these ideas. Don't make a movie about Shepard, there is no way to do it that works for everyone. First Contact is the best way to portray the Mass Effect universe for both fans and just general movie goers alike. I mean the main character can be one of the original N7 candidates (I just bet they'd use Sam Worthington..I'm not sure how that'd make me feel.) Plus using first contact you can introduce people who've never played the games to the Turians and other Citadel races the way humanity would have encountered them in the games own timeline. It's work out great. Just keep Uwe Boll away and we will be fine

Nah they would make 3 mass effect movies, which would explain each chapter of the trilogy.  The first movie is dedicated to Saren and Sovereign. While the second is dedicated to the suicide mission, and the collectors, while the third is the final battle against the reapers.

They should possibly make two versions of the Mass Effect movie, one with a fem shep and the other with a male.  It would be intersting to see if there are any differences between the two.

Trust me on this, there will be some arguments on which side Bioware takes on the movie in terms of romances and decisions that Shepard makes.

I say the Mass Effect movie is going to work because, for some reason, every time I finish ME2 I feel like watching Transformers 2.

Personally I'd prefer a movie that goes more as a side story in the same universe, including biotic powers, identical weapons, races, places as in video game. Perhaps it should explain history before ME1 and ME Revelation - Prothean story, human discovery of Mass relays... .

Something that doesnt envolve any character of ME game directly, with exception of a common threat, the Reapers.

Plot is wide and deep enough to support this. BioWare should let the essence of the game remain as it is: to be Commander Shepard, making your own future.

Movie, should give you just another angle of this spectacular story. The audience with first contact in ME 'll have unique story to yet be found, while those who have played the game, will enjoy in background details.

yes there will be a Mass Effect movie and it is though to be released in 2012 or 2013. It is a bery exciting thing there is no official cast but the writer is the one who wrote I am Legend, thor etc. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are producing. The cast is very interesting most thing that Jack from lost will play shepard i dnt think hes the best fit i believe either Russel Crowe, Johnny Depp, or Sam Worthington are the best candidates. keep in mind this is purely the ME1 movie it will not involve ME2 plot unless its a teaser for a sequel hope they do it right.

It could only work if Shepard is not in it. In other words, a prequel, spinoff or sequel to the main series.

Even then it will be dicey.

Hell, just picking a gender for Shepard will alienate half the base off the bat, never mind the other parameters.
