At least I base my beliefs on robust evidence. Reapers are overrated. Give me one Drake Battlecruiser and watch as they bang their hulls against my shields in a futile attempt to intimidate me while I call and wait for CONCORD to blast them to kingdom come.

I'm on the same boat with you. Started teaching friend of mine from the beginning. We played silver until he had lvl 20 infiltrator then we did one succesful gold duo where he learned about survivability on higher difficulties. After 9h of gameplay he is totally viable for gold matches. He rarely dies and end up 3rd or 2nd place every time. i'm thinking that we should do some biotic duo's next time we play

carry on teaching him all the cheesy stuff (box of shame included). There is simply too much sh*t to unlock, trying to get that all "honest" is just stupid. My first gold games were FBWGG and eventually I grew comfortable with gold which was necessary to boost my skills. But make it clear that the game will be a lot more fun once you step out of your comfort zone, so get him to leave the box eventually.

40 min matches and box of shame?! If i was your friend, id be getting bored and tempted to stop playing. Dont get him too obsessed about unlocking stuff. he should still be playing for the fun of playing. Ive got loads of URs left to unlock but im playing for fun. 

silver duos make a lot more sense, but he should also be playing with 3 pugs so he can start getting used to the complete randomness of it all so he can meet some really great and truly awful players plus leechers etc. I;m guessing youve warned him also about missile glitching and the hydra map cheat?

You could also just play with 2 other BSNers who are happy to have your friend along so he can have quicker matches and earn credits and hopefully meet nice players too. im happy to play with you guys (see sig), and then you and I can have a fight over who is scrubbiest on BSN

Hey all, I'm the newbie Austere is coaching.

It might seem boring doing the box when you're used to the game but to me it's all still new so I've been having a blast trying to make it all the way through a gold. I realize it's not something you want to get used to and I'm not naive enough to think doing golds normally is like that, so I honestly don't think it's been getting me into bad habits, I take it for what it is. And if it's not clear in this thread, we've played lots of silvers and other maps too!

I'm getting more comfortable with the game mechanics so will be trying with a group soon. Dont be so hard on yourself Austere, The coaching feels just right for me so far

You'd probably be better off doing the complete opposite of whatever I tell you. But we still managed a gold with just the two of us - and you're way more competent than 80% of gold PUGs I've played with.

I think we should try more maps though. Don't worry about other people slating the box of shame - 99% of plat PUGs if you search U/U/P end up being against Reapers on Rio.

People love their camping - hey, that's why Bioware had to change FB White and disable grabbing geth pyros over cover .

I think we're all just scrubs at the end of the day.

When I get a new player who wants to play with me I make him/her start by duoing Gold Giant Reapers with me. At the same time I show things like right hand advantage, reload canceling, spawn mechanics, kiting and some other stuff. I also give them different builds for their characters so that they start with a good build. When playing with a full team I take them to Platinum immediately.

From my experience, they tend to learn a lot faster when there are only two of us playing at a higher difficulty.
