So.. I need a place to speculate, a place that I feel comfortable. I have been cautiously following the news about Lucasfilm being bought by Disney, J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, etc. I know the BSN will have a strong opinion on this subject, as I do.
The Star Wars films were a huge part of my childhood, and although I didn't loathe the prequel trilogy with the burning passion that many of my peers did, they were definitely poorly directed and written for the most part. They more or less gave us a condescending view into the lives of the Jedi as the Old Republic fell, and the Anakin arc was just too predictable and heavy-handed.
I am optimistic about these new films, partially because I loved the NJO novels and all the Thrawn stuff, and partially because I know there's nowhere to go but up after Jar-Jar and the Mace Windu death scene.
Anyone else care to post their subjective guesses or opinions on the rumors and actors they would love/hate to see as stars of this new trilogy?
( I am particularily excited about the lead vocalist for Florence and the Machine being recently cast...)

That said, I'm somewhat more encouraged that Kasdan is invovled as he at least had some positive involvement in writing screenplays during OT. For whatever reason he declined to be involved in the prequels. I wonder if he might have had a positive influence.
Regardless, I'm curious if Lucas is involved with story treatments. I think he's pretty good with ideas and story treatments and less good with actual screenplays and directing. So if you paired a Lucas story treatment with some other screenwriter, that would be cool.
I'm not a big EU guy. And it would make the speculation and rumormongering in advance of release less interesting if they based it off of EU stories.
We'll see how it goes. But when I saw Abrams attached to it I thought "Well, the space battles and lightsaber battles will be good. But maybe not much else." It's possible I'm cynical. On the bright side, I'd like to be wrong.

I am hoping its not the expanded universe and would like to see something from an earlier period. Like TOR. Yet, it would be nice to see Luke et al aged and curmudgeony. XD
It would be part of the EU. And it's taking place post-Jedi.
Luke is anything but a curmudgeon by the way. He's the Grand Master of the New Jedi Order.
I just hope they don't completely scrap all the books from the Truce at Bakura all the way up to Crucible just to tell some story. Just like I hope they don't retcon people like Thrawn, Mara Jade, Pellaeon, the Solo Twins, Anakin, etc.
And I really hope they keep Chewbacca dead. His death had so much poignance, his character arc going full circle.

You have a problem with Mandalorians mate?
Though travis did take a good thing and ruined it, then ****ed up the moffs, then he who shall not be named cluster ****ed it all in the end. Star Wars is pretty much dead to me.

Funny, that's exactly how I'd describe Star Wars Episodes 4 and 6.Giltspur wrote...
Well, I'm not thrilled about J.J. Abrams being the director because I feel like he's able to make movies that are entertaining for the two hours that you watch but that aren't memorable beyond that.
The Empire Strikes Back is the only Star Wars-related thing I've thought was truly great.

Indeed. Though it could've been worse like Bobo Fett lightsaber dueling Jaina, and Jacen at the same time with one arm tied behind his back, while resisting Luke's force projections, as Ben sobs in a corner, while Daala turns out to be the reincarnation of Nomi Sunrider, whose force potential is greater than Palpatine's, and Yoda's combined, who casually defeats an Infinity Gauntlet wearing Luke who crushed some shards of the Kaiburr crystal then snorted them beforehand in a duel, kind of worse.MassivelyEffective0730 wrote...

I won't let Lucas and some bad authors ruin the Star Wars Universe for me. I already pretty much lost Mass Effect, I am NOT going to lose the cornerstone story of my youth.
I have a problem with Karen Traviss. Take that for what you will. She pretty much ruined Mandalorians for me.
I don't even like the Republic Commando books because the pro-Mandalorian/anti-Jedi bias is so obnoxiousiously prevalent.
It's almost like reading a Timothy Zahn novel: I love him, I love Thrawn, but does he seriously have to shoehorn him into every bit of work he does? The only Star Wars novel I've read by Zahn that doesn't have Thrawn in it is Scoundrels.

What are you talking about? The galaxy was at peace from the end of the NJO to the Legacy comics. And Traviss and Denning weren´t allowed near SW ever again. (Really, WTF happened to Denning? I can´t believe he´s the same guy who wrote Star by Star & Tatooine Ghost).

One of my favorite moments ever is from the novel "Star by Star" when Ganner Rhysode makes the ill-fated stand against a garrison of Vong warriors. (Pretty amazing also when Jacen is broken and rebuilt in the Vong headquarters)
I suppose it is for the best, as no film can outdo my imagination.

What are you talking about? The galaxy was not at peace from the end of the NJO books to the Legacy era. The last NJO book is 'The Unifying Force', which takes place in 29 ABY.
6 years later in 35-36 ABY, you have the Swarm War trilogy of books. Though not a 'galactic scale war' like the NJO books, that was a very significant event. It lead to the return of several characters and marked changes in their personalities, and the creation of new and important characters (like Allana Solo).
4 years later, there was the really important 'Legacy of the Force' series - the Second Galactic Civil War, where Jacen Solo turns to the Dark Side and becomes Darth Caedus. He sort of instigates the deadliest conflict since the end of the Vong War. It's fairly brief, lasting in universe for about 2 years, but it's very devastating, with the deaths of several of the most important characters in the Star Wars Universe (Mara Jade Skywalker, Jacen/Caedus, Lumiya, Gilad Pellaeon, Thrackan Sal-Solo, Prince Isolder, etc.) That qualifies as very major conflict since it lays the framework for the Legacy era. And at the end, the old Imperial War Criminal Daala becomes Chief of State of the Galactic Alliance.
Then there was the 'Fate of the Jedi' series that took place 2-4 years after LotF. FotJ is a period of unrest in the galaxy where the Jedi, and Luke specifically, are being held to blame for not preventing the events of LotF, specifically Jacen's fall to the Dark Side. Luke is exiled from the Galactic Alliance and barred from returning to Coruscant until he finds out why Jacen fell to the Dark Side. That said, there is political upheaval as various Jedi Knights start to fall victim to a mysterious Force-psychosis, an ancient and forgotten sect of the Old Sith Empire resurfaces, the New Jedi Order struggles to maintain peace in the galaxy without Luke's leadership and guidance while various Jedi succumb to the Force-psychosis and relations with the Galactic Alliance continue to deteriorate. And on top of it all, a mysterious Cthulu-like being that is a physical manifestation of the Dark Side lies at the center of the problems.
And Troy Denning is still writing Star Wars books - his next novel is coming out in less than a week.

Just my mind canon.
And the Denning who wrote SbS & TG feels completely different than the one who´s behind most post-NJO. And not for the better.

Its very unfortunate that the Expanded Universe is going to be ignored. I agree that Jacen vs. Ben is potentially epic if a bit like Anakin vs Obi-Wan.

There's no point to do Jacen vs. Ben.
There'd be no contest. Jacen is at the absolute prime of his life and abilities (a fully trained Sith Lord), whearus Ben is a 14 year old boy at the time of Jacen's death.
Personally, I'm torn as to where I'd want to see a film take place post-Jedi. I'd love to see them do the Heir to Empire trilogy, but then they couldn't use Hamill, Ford, and Fisher. They'd have to use a younger set of actors.
That said, the SW universe is in the perfect place to pick up for the characters, though so much will have changed to the Universe that people wouldn't know what the hell was going on. Suddenly you'd have Luke as a Jedi Master of a New Jedi Order with a son who is almost a grown man, anda wife who is unseen because she is dead. Han and Leia are grandparents, with two children already dead. Chewbacca is dead. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There'd have to be a huge, huge exposition dump to explain to the masses what has happened to the galaxy and the characters for the last 41 years since Return of the Jedi.
And a lot has happened.
I'm guessing people would want new heroes to supplant the old ones, and to carry the torch forward for them. And of course, we have (or had) them with the Solo Twins, Anakin, and Ben leading the pack. That said, if they were start up post-Crucible, they'd already be on the way to replacing the younger generation. Luke and Leia are in their 60's. Han is in his 70's. Jacen and Anakin are dead. Jaina is still viable, seeing as she just got married (to the next Emperor of the Empire no less), though she's in her mid-30's now and possibly a little too old to focus on. Ben is probably who they could focus on seeing as he's right up at the perfect place in his life, plus he's the son of the hero.
The issue is explaining it all. And pulling it off.
And I don't think they're going to bother keeping the Post-Jedi EU intact (I'm hoping they do what Lucas did and call for a cap where no more books or comics can be made during a certain period). There are of course a few area's where they can get some leeway with timeline issues, but they've literally gone so far in the last 20 years of expansion that its impossible to really make any film that would mesh with the masses while also pleasing the fanboys with the consistency to the lore. And I'm guessing that we fanboys are going to get thrown under the bus.
