Kotaku ruined how Kylo Ren looks without his mask for me, really dickish of them to put the picture on their front page.

Consider this: everything we've seen of The First Order so far has built off of old Empire designs. We've got the new shuttle, the new stormtroopers, the new insignia, the new tie fighters; all are based upon existing things but with built improvements. I don't think it is that far of a stretch for Vader's helmet to come into play in the same manner. We already know that someone goes back to grab Vader's helmet from the trailer. This would explain why.

I can see Kylo Ren's helmet design a bit when I pretend the nose piece isn't there on Vader's helmet and imagine the eye piece on the right being reconstructed a bit. It looks like the samurai part of the helmet got ditched or scrapped, maybe it was used to make part of Kylo Ren's helmet's mouth piece?

It was probably taken from Endor since Luke burned Vader's body there, likely with the helmet.
