Well, I'm not thrilled about J.J. Abrams being the director because I feel like he's able to make movies that are entertaining for the two hours that you watch but that aren't memorable beyond that. And liking Star Wars as I do, I'd like for them to be more than that.
I dunno, I found his
I'm not a big EU guy. And it would make the speculation and rumormongering in advance of release less interesting if they based it off of EU stories.
I'm pretty sure they're murdering the EU, by which I mean, thank god.
We'll see how it goes. But when I saw Abrams attached to it I thought "Well, the space battles and lightsaber battles will be good. But maybe not much else." It's possible I'm cynical. On the bright side, I'd like to be wrong.
Star Wars is all about the space battles and lightsaber battles. That and the very straightforward hero's journey arc.

I take it you're not a fan of the EU? May I ask why?
The best stories and some of the best characters in Star Wars come out of the EU.

The NJO novels rocked. The rest is hit or miss...
NJO had a bad start, but quickly started picking up
A lot of the Bantam books were pretty bad. Especially the Callista/Darksaber "trilogy". And 'The Crystal Star'?
*shudders*
Legacy of the Force was good when Karen Traviss wasn't mary-suing the hell out of the Mandalorians. Actually, the 6 books in LotF that weren't written by her were good. Her three just were terrible.
The only other issue is the books felt disjointed between Aaron Allston and Troy Denning's style.
FotJ had a bad overall premise (Abeloth plot), but were executed very well.
The best books in my opinion (and possibly even better than the movies) are the X-Wing series of books, focusing on Wedge Antilles and Rogue Squadron (the Rebel pilots you see in the movies).
Those are some of the finest, most entertaining military science fiction books I've ever read, period.

Although, I don't think Abrams is interested in that. The Thrawn trilogy would have been great too, especially if they would introduce Mara Jade.
However, they know better than to replace the iconic characters with different actors. And lets face it, there are a lot of eras in the Expanded Universe which they could focus on and/or even create their own timeline.

If they would focus on the New Jedi Order era, that would have been awesome. "Star by Star" and the "Dark Tide" duology were pure genius in my oppinion.

There are a few places in the timeline that they could use, namely the era after FotJ. The actors are all in that perfect age range.
I'd rather they didn't use a new timeline.

Well I heard they already cast Harrison Ford to return, so it looks like the old cast is coming back
Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are coming back too.
I love Chewbacca and Peter Mayhew, but if I see his name, I'm going to punch someone.
Chewbacca is dead. He died in the most fitting way possible for him. His story arc and character came full circle. We don't need crap movie canon coming in to ruin it.

I'm interested to see how Mark Hamil looks for the movie. Ford should be fine. Now I'm not sure what Carrie Fisher has been up to as of late. In this vid of William Shatner singing to George Lucas, she does look a bit 'off' at 11 seconds.

I haven't seen Mark Hamill in a movie since Star Wars, so I was incredibly surprised to see his name pop up in the preview for Sushi Girl. I was like "Wha...!?" It's like he was anticipating the Star Wars sequels. Or maybe he's been around all this time and I've just missed him (TV series?). TBH, I don't think he and Fisher have aged well, unlike Ford.

Now as far as story goes I never read the NJO books or anything so I dont know if they would make good plot for a movie.
Also the main character will be Buzz Lightyear...

It might be post-FotJ.
Problem is, so much has happened that in the EU. The masses aren't going to like the massive exposition dump explaining things that would be key events to them. People aren't going to like the fact that Han and Leia had 3 children, only for 2 of them to already be dead by the time of the story. They are going to wonder who Ben's mother is, or who the Yuuzhan Vong are, or how Chewbacca died (or why he's even dead for that matter), or what the Galactic Alliance is, or why the New Jedi Order is so different, or why the Empire are good guys now (or at least not bad... entirely).
And I don't think Disney is going to just say "go look at the 20+ years of books, comics, games, etc. for your answers"
No, they'll probably create their own canon/timeline. It's what makes most sense. Though as a diehard fan of the EU, especially Post-Jedi, it's the last thing you really want to see. Because Disney will be more or less invalidating that portion of the EU with the film they decide to do. And I don't think pulling an alternate timeline warp ala Star Trek is going to work this time, J.J.

Apparently there will be two females leads, a young male lead and an older, cocky (Solo-esque) male lead. I haven't read any post-Jedi material, so does that fit any of the possibilities?
Leia and Jaina Solo.
Han is returning.
The younger might be Ben.
Luke is also returning.

Wookieepedia is your friend.

It wasn't ignominious. He died in a badass way.
Seriously. It took an entire freaking moon to kill him.
And his character went full circle.
He died fulfilling his life-debt to Han, saving Han's life and that of Anakin.
