I thought the trailer was pretty cool without being completely convincing. Firstly what I didn't like. The lightsaber. I just didn't like the look and feel of it, I think lightsabers are somewhat iconic and while I though Darth Mauls double saber was pretty cool, I guess I just didn't like this design. I also didn't like the "wake up" then Boyega waking up tie in of the trailer, just seemed tacky, that's more the trailer than the film itself though.
I did like the droid and Ridleys speeder, both the visual and audio design. They are examples of new designs but they instantly have the star wars feel to them. I liked the feel of the storm troopers before they disembarked, just felt more real than the prequels where that scene would have probably been generated by CGI. I liked the feeling of the dark robed sith(?) before she/he ignited the lightsaber. The falcon and x-wing scenes were too short to say much about.
I would personally prefer they didn't return to tatooine unless there was a very good reason in the story. We have seen that planet enough and doing so simply for nostalgia is a mistake imo.
I'm pretty optimistic that these will be good movies. I hope people can just sit back and enjoy them if they are merely good, rather than great, and not get ridiculous expectations and then become ultra critical.

Wasn't big fan of the trailer, if someone hadn't told me it was an official trailer, I could have easily thought it was some fanmade crap again. Hopefully the movie itself will be good, but so far I am not convinced.
"Something something dark side" in as weird voice as possible, add cackles when necessary.

The Force Awakens will go down as the most expensive fan fiction movie ever made and also the worst fan fiction movie ever made. Just watch JJ copy and paste iconic scenes and lines out of the original trilogy and prequel trilogy just like the semi-rehash Star Trek into Darkness regurgitating the "Khaaaaan!" from Wrath of Kahn.

Has anyone seen the Disney version of the trailer? It's hilarious.

I have a theory about the Dark Jedi's weapon; maybe he/she is alone. No master. This would make sense, because ep. 6. Without any guidance, they may have trouble perfecting the design. Perhaps the extra "blades" aren't blades at all. They may simply be exhaust-- excess energy wasted/vented because of shoddy emitter performance. I can't be the only one who noticed the way this character walked. Hunched over and looking pained. They had dark rags on, rather than sleek black robes like a Sith Lord. Just my opinion..
Could it be...

I don't get why you're all so against the lightsaber design this time. It just, bothers me really. I mean, just wait... I can guarantee you that something bad ass is gonna come out of it. I personally think that JJ Abrams is gonna plop down and show us all where it's at when he makes a billion dollars on his opening weekend.
This trailer has me psyched for the movie and it doesn't even come out until next year. When I first saw the Millenium Falcon, I got emotional. I can't imagine watching the whole movie. I'm prolly gonna have to pay for the movie like 3 times, because I'm gonna be crying my eyes out.
Especially in 3d. Jeezus. Can't imagine that barrel roll in 3d.

As I mentioned before, the design will only be ridiculous if the user flips and twirls it around like a baton. If it is wielded in battle like a claymore (which the design is clearly based on) then it can work, and the crossguard will have the added benefit of helping protect you from an enemy lopping off your hands.

Yup, and I would bet that the lightsaber combat is more traditional like the first trilogy rather than the whirling dervish style of the prequel trilogy

The point is, it is not heavy at all. You can swing that saber how way you like. Not a Claymore/Great-Sword.

They originally were supposed to be, at least in the original trilogy.
No idea on the explanation for the prequel trilogy, and well everything else with the flashy styles.

Not really, the problem in the OT was that the props were unwieldy and harder to use.
In universe, I guess the problem is different, as you have to swing something with no balance as only the handle weights.

It's clearly based on a Longsword.
If it was a Claymore it'd have a longer hilt.

Also; think of the lightsaber like a cellphone-- any of us can twirl one around and text with ease... but our grandparents or someone from a 3rd world country would use one very clumsily and slowly.
The prequel Jedi were all well-versed in laser-sword combat. They dealt with these weapons everyday. Luke, however, didn't even touch one until he was a young adult, and Vader had maybe 20 -30% of the dexterity and agility he had as a Jedi Knight. He had to rely on strength & the Force.
On top of all this, the prequel Jedi likely had a "saber shop" or at least a more common working knowledge of the tech involved (not to mention more available new parts). Luke had to guess and use Obi-Wan's decades-old notes to build his own weapon.
These reasons make me believe the new film will have salvaged and scavenged lightsaber tech/knowledge.

On the subject of lightsaber combat acrobatics:
I recall having seen some interviews were it was stated that lightsaber combat was always intended to be faster and more fluid than what was shown in the original trilogy, though the quality of props largely made it impossible and the reason why there's such a stark contrast to the prequel trilogy had been attributed that it's a time when, even though Jedi, etc. pp. were already past their prime, they still very much were on the spot and more importantly properly trained for using those lightsabers, compared to a Luke who learned most that he knows from fighting a drone or marathoning through a jungle planet with a near dead mentor in his backpack, plus the one trained force wielder, Vader, being largely a cyborg who's not keeling over dead due to all the tech stuffed around and inside him.
Point being, the original lightsaber choreography was subpar compared to what they wanted and the prequel choreographies really provided a massive contrast where the former would look like a couple untrained dudes clubbing around painted wooden sticks by comparision, creating a biased perspective among the fans.
Could just be a giant handwave to save face though, so take it however you want. I do sadly not remember where I saw those interviews, so I can't link a source for you guys to check it out for yourselves.
Brb, budgee
'ed me. With the source even. I concede a complete defeat.

Eh, I'm rather torn on the lightsaber choreography.
While the fighting was more fluid and energetic in the prequels, at times, I couldn't help but feel that it was less about two people with laser swords trying to stab each other and more like a staged dance where they were just whacking wooden sticks. A lot of the twirling and back-exposing was pretty pointless. (Not to say that the originals were perfect). The actual fight wasn't really the point but rather the interactions between the actual characters.
On the other hand, it was a good way to show how confident the Jedi/Sith were in their abilities as reflecting the time period. I'm not sure why people are complaining about the cross-guarded lightsaber being "unsafe" when there was a time when people could throw their sabers like boomerangs.
