Unfortunately the cannon purge didn't get rid of a bunch of ridiculous things it should have, like substantial portions of the Clone Wars cartoons. And we lost Thrawn. Still, for the most part, the purge was for the best. 

 

Yeah ... at first I was like "No, not the EU! Do not destroy it!" Then I thought it over and realized, the only cool things were early the Pre-movie era (Kotor) that can still exist, and Mara, Thrawn, Pelleaon...

 

All the rest? I actually don't care, and goodbye to the Vong, glad to never have known you...oh, the Legacy-Stuff with Imperial Knights was also kind of a cool idea.

 

And really, we need more infos on the upcoming movie so we can discuss it, love it hate it...instead of this whole lesbian moff stuff I had to browse throguh last page...really? that's interesting to some people? They get outraged? Who cares if a moff is a lesbian, as long as she is hot, and has a harem of Twi'Lek-girls of every colour...

I'm expecting them to bring Mara Jade back in Rebels (she was originally going to appear in The Clone Wars in the episode where Darth Sidious was having Force Sensitive children kidnapped), the show does focus a little bit on and did bring back the Inquisitors.

I don't want any family connections for the new trilogy, it's predictable and if rumors are true that the girl is the next Skywalker then they're going to come with a reason on why she's apparently an orphan. I don't think it's worth the headache and the writers should focus on symbolic relationships like Anaking viewing Obi-Wan as a father and Obi-Wan looking at Anakin as his brother in Revenge of the Sith.

I don't think per se borrowing from the original EU is bad. I'm sure there were good ideas in there (like the concept of Coruscant).

I think they'll probably take the more popular elements that came from the Empire Era like Mara Jade and Thrawn.

 

At the celebration they stated that their current focus is on the new canon, but they might continue to expand on Legends.

You're forgetting these are the same people that were outraged when Dorian and Sera were revealed to be gay. Like I said above, I'd hope they come up with more original concepts.

That is the Genius of it all. That's the reason why they destroyed the EU in the first place. They can (and will) borrow from Salvatore and Luceno, change the names or a few details, and shrug their shoulders. Despite some characters being obvious rip-offs Disney now has the legal privilege to say "she just HAPPENS to be a Redhead Milf force-sensitive with a crush on Luke. She isn't Mara Jade."

rules always were the EU can never contradict the movies but the movies can contradict the EU.
