I've been getting heavily into various vampire fiction recently, and playing as vampires in games. Its been a long while since I played through Origins and Awakening last, and I decided it might be time for another go - with a twist based on my current enthusiasm.

I like to roleplay, and so i'm trying to build a concept in my head that while not quite what the game intends, would be interesting to roleplay.

I'm unsure whether i'll choose to play a male or female character, but it will be a warrior Cousland either way. The reason being that the Reaver specialization and the plotline of mixing dragons blood with divine ashes and consuming them makes not only a perfect vampiric warrior class, but also works very well as a vampiric origin from a storyline point of view. However, its been a long time, so what other choices should I make statwise for the character to be a combat monster? I'm thinkign Reaver then Berserker, as it fits the blood devouring bloodrage. I'm just not sure how effective it would be.

Male or female comes down to whether I want to have the character end up with Morrigan or Leliana. The former has more overall plot relevance to the Origin DLC, I suppose, and is never short of urgings to seek dark power. However, Leliana is still one of the sweetest and most interesting characters in fantasy in my opinion, and offers great potential for drama. A romance up until the Ashes, where she 'betrays' the player character and they are forced to strike her down? Or perhaps hardened, the PC would lie to her, with Leliana knowing deep down... but unable to admit to herself what the vampiric PC had done. If i play male, I suppose I could play up the love triagle, but I always felt with Leliana's tendencies and past that a female PC fits her better. Opinions? Based on drama, of course, as opposed to ingame rewards.

I plan to roleplay it as a full turn to undeath; the ashes and the dragons blood more or less rendering the Taints negative and mutating properties inert, by basically overpowering them. Feeding in battle is easy enough, which gets around the problem of roleplaying it in towns and hubs. So, i'll be wanting to make choices that a now very powerful, driven, and corrupted PC might make... any thoughts and justifications on the big ones? I'm not really going for outright evil, as all choices in DA:O that the PC makes (Howe aside) can be for the greater good, and that will be the motive for taking the defiled mixture. Personal power, and agelessness/immortality, won't really be a factor. For the former, that already falls into the players lap, and as to the latter the PC would probobly not even realise they no longer age for decades.

Finally, ideally i'd like to go from having the character looking 'normal' before taking the ashes, to looking pale with reds eyes afterwards. Would any of the save editors out there give me the ability to do this?

Odd post I know, but none the less i'd appreciate input.

I'll preface this with the fact that Reaver is virtually the only spec I haven't played as, so this is only what I've heard. However...

From what I understand, Reaver is best as a tank's spec. You need to be able to fight when you are low on HP, and Aura of Pain is much more effective at drawing aggro than it is at dealing damage, so basically you want to be a tank. Sword and board with Champ as second (or first?) spec sounds a good way to go. DW would be okay if you would prefer DPS since you'll have a high Dex - and thus, defence - score. But do not go 2H.

Beserker fits thematically, but as a tank Champion is probably the better bet for the other spec.

Try to get lots of gear with +X Health Regen to mitigate the effects of Reaver. That'll probably be your focus for equipment.

From a plot POV, however, I love the idea of it. I like my characters to have tragic character arcs - makes them so much more interesting than just a squeaky clean, generic hero. From that point of view, I'd probably want Reaver as my level 14 spec. That gives you plenty of time to build up your hero's journey, fall in love, etc., before the Ashes trip you up and warp your path. It gives you enough time to have a full relationship with Leliana/Morrigan beforehand. Plus, metagaming, the Sacred Ashes works better as one of the last treaty mission locations to visit, IMHO.

Just a few thoughs: howabout a very pious, religious character? One who always dreamed of being (no, EXPECTED to be) a brave, virtuous knight - riding forth to defend the weak, battle demons and smite down the heathen enemies of the Maker. Totally enchanted by Leliana, you fall for her instantly. You always wanted to look on the face of Andraste, and you sometimes think you can see her in Leliana. However, then Kolgrim says Andraste has been reborn and you can literally see her for real. You aren't defiling Andraste's ashes - you're setting her free in her new and glorious dragon form! And just think - you would be the champion of Andraste herself. What honour. What glory. It breaks your heart when Leliana turns on you; a huge blow to your increasingly fragile sanity when you strike her down. Kolgrim gives you the blood, and you leave the mountain convinced you are the First Knight of reborn Andraste herself - able to strike down even the Archdemon!

A Morrigan romance offers, in my opinion, a subtler conflict. Depending on how your character actually views the gaining of the Reaver abilities (a Faustian bargain that haunts him? a fast-track ticket to power?) the most likely crisis point comes when Morrigan offers her Dark Ritual. Do you see your lover making a bid to usurp your power? Do you think your 'vampiric' blood will taint the OGB?

Just a few thoughts. Sounds like a really interesting playthrough though. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I'd love more thoughts if anyone wants to add anything?
