I agree that paraphrasing of the dialogue choices is a lot more harmful to the roleplaying experience than the protagonist having a voice. You should never, ever, be surprised by what the character you are roleplaying is saying only the responses of the NPC's.

Just to be contrary:

I rather like being surprised. I start a game with only a vague idea of who the character I'm piloting is, and through the dialogue I learn and develop.

My most recent Hawke I wanted to be quite aggressive, so I began picking "red" options, only to discover this was really the "unreasonable tool" path, so I decided this was a combination of bravado and a lack of self confidence. As they grew as a person, I filtered it out.

The suprise informed a character arc.

Silent, definitly!

It allows me to roleplay my character better because I can imagine the voice and tone I think fit the character. One of the reasons I greatly prefer the Warden, the character felt like mine while Hawke felt like BioWare's and thus I didn't care for him.

On top of that comes the choice of VA, it can make things even worse, German male Hawke is an example. While the work of the VA is good, he voiced Zevran in Origins and thus I can't play as male Hawke. Everytime he speaks I imagine Zevran and immersion is gone.

Silent. But we'll never ever get that again, so we may as well just roll with it.

I personally prefer silent. I
rarely like the voice I have to use with voiced PCs, I usually have to
design my character so the voice will fit with him/her, there are more
options with a silent PC, and I have no issue reading the voice in my
head in my desired tone.

Voiced PC may add more emotion to a
scene, but sometimes said emotion isn't going to be what you want your
character to be feeling.

But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

I'm fine with both of them, but you need good voice actors for the latter. Male/female Hawkes were bad, especially female voiceover.

Blargh, as long as they don't have horrid voice actors, like Hawke did, I'm alright with voiced.

Voiced all the way. Silent protagonists are so boring, it brings tears. It's also the reason why I loved Hawke more than Warden.

hey the Warden had a voice.

Shall i get you a ladder so you can get off my back?

I cringed every time I heard that. Worst play through ever. :pinched:

Personally, I prefer voiced pc. But BioWare has shown that they haven't nailed the perfect balance yet. If things continue in BW games the way they've been doing it thus far, meh. Jo Wyatt and Jennifer Hale are what kept it from being a nightmare, for me. At least with their voices, I could be super sultry, or badass, and I'm ok with that.

But the wheels, oh sweet baby Jesus, their dialogue wheels need help.

Definitely prefer voiced especially since the other characters are voiced as well.  For me, it's either everyone is voiced or no one is.  None if this everyone but the protagonist is voiced crap like in DA:O.  It was annoying and jarring for me.

If the protagonist is silent, everybody else had better be too.

I will only accept a silent protagonist if every single cutscene is mimed in the comedic slapstick style of the LEGO videogames.

What would be really, really awesome would be a silent game as a stylistic choice, designed like a silent movie. Might even come in black and white too.

Not sure it would fit the fantasy genre, though (unless they also go for stop motion like monster animation)

I don't like silent characters. It's just awkward I prefer voiced.

I only found it awkward when I first played Dragon Age. It's easy for me to just imagine their voice and forget that they're actually being silent.

same here.
voice is cute, but I have to say that for me, since the DA series is not voiced in Italian, is just the same as if the characters (even NPC) are all silent, since I have to read subtitles to understand what is said. voices for me are just background sounds, since usually the VO speak too fast for me to understand.

and I find more strange for the PC to speak, since the only other GDR (or at least presentend as such) with a voiced PC I have ever played is Mass Effect.

It depends.

A silent protagonist can have more dialog options than a voiced protagonist, because is not limited. Besides, sometimes the voice not really fits the character or the voiced actor messed up.

But if the voice actor chosen for the protagonist is good and don't messes up, it will give us a far better interaction than a silent protagonist.

Silent. When I create a character, I imagine my own voice for them and it has yet to match up with any of the voice actors. I also play multiple playthroughs with different characters so hearing the same voice breaks it for me. Not to mention the paraphrasing and limited dialog choices.
