do wasps serve a purpose in nature? bees make honey and pollinate, so do wasps do anything other than be douchebags?
Some species do polinate, and practically each wasp species acts as a predator to one other insect, nature's very own crowd control. If an organism has no use in nature, then it would've gone extinct a long time ago.

I believe they kill huge numbers of other insects - many of which we consider pest species, so that's positive I guess. Although most wasps do that in a really horrible way

WHO ARE YOU???
seriously, you have posted some of the most interesting things I've read around here in the last few weeks.
keep it up.
It's how I compensate for my inability to play the game. I fill the boards with Geth stunlock poetry and entomological facts. If I could just keep my damned Tempest on target, I wouldn't need to do this sort of thing.

Why would wasps want to track the CO2 in your breath? Don't most wasps feed on nectar? Mosquitos and midges understandably track CO2 to reach their food sources, but wasps?
I suppose it's because larger threats to the hive tend toward standard Oxygen/CO2 respiration. Wasps are totally min/maxed toward zerg-style boss raids. Acquire the target, lay down the attack pheremone, and get a few thousand of your closest friends to work on its health bar.

In the case of the Jewel Wasp, the control over other pests (roaches) is more literal than you might assume. They inject venom into the head of the roach, blocking a neurotransmitter (the name of which I cannot recall) that would otherwise allow for fight of flight.
tl;dr Jewel Wasps make zombies out of roaches
