JRPGs are, pretty much. Though I will agree that the FF XIII hate is at a whole 'nother level.

I would say the hate for 13 is warranted but for jrpgs? I don't get it. Whenever someone mentions a jrpg people scoff at it.

Yeah I don't get that either. Gamers are missing out on some quality experiences

I don't if BSN hates all jrpgs are just the more recent ones. Whoever doesn't like Chrono Trigger doesn't like kittens either.

Its really patchtic to watch some people try and compartmentalize what games deserve hate and others that should be universally loved.

Well I say first, BOO Lightning>all

And then, they dislike them because JRPGs are famous for their obsession with fasion and characters who seem like children, and their often wacky storylines. How many JRPGs are based on political intrigue and not some wild plot about crystals and summoning the Maker, and this alien being who came down from a comet and had a son with long hair, or some such? They're very fantastic, not really based on realism.

How much is it political intrigue and how much is it them running from their problems, though? I watched a small amount of the beginning cutscenes and while it didn't make any sense (especially the cat lady--there's another reason people dislike JRPGs, Japan's slightly odd fetishes) it just seemed like them running away.

Now, I DO intend to play it one day, but that was my impression from the beginning.

I used to really like JRPGs back in the days of PS1 but now I can't stand the damn grinding, clunky gameplay and non-sensical manga plots.

I'm not holding my breath but I really hope Square Enix take some lessons from BioWare, CD Projekt RED and other western RPGs developers for XV.

This is why more often than not it is better for JRPGs to have plots that don't take themselves too seriously. 'Serious' Japanese writing is usually quite terrible.

Better yet more Westerners should make JRPGs. Cthulhu Saves the World is a better JRPG than pretty much every modern Final Fantasy game.

XV will be very action, so you may get your wish. There won't even be turn combat. In addition, it's based on modern times--there are cars and such. Same basic basic idea, setting-wise, as FF XIII.

I personally don't want them to (take lessons from westerners) in some ways, like the I NEED BOOBS AND HEADS CHOPPED OFF FOR THIS STORY TO BE SRS that seems to pervade this place.

That's certainly debatable. I personally enjoyed XIII immensely. Cthulhu is fun, but that's all it is: fun. I want more purpose in my gameplay. A serious story, like FF XIII has (or even something like VII, though on a lower level), is thought provoking. It isn't just hedonism.

It all depends on what you're looking for.

I'm surprised that anyone would want to play FFVII on PC these days. It's a very good game and it is worth playing but when it comes to graphics it hasn't aged very well at all. I bought FFVII on thePSN store for my Vita a year ago, it holds up reasonably well on the Vita's much smaller OLED screen but on a Modern PC monitor I imagine that FFVII is an eye sore. I've tried playing FFVII on my 40 inch LED tv and it does not look right at all.

Strawman.

I love serious stories too. It's just that the FF games (and most JRPGs) are simply too narmy for me to be able enjoy them as 'serious' games.

The majority of the time the 'serious' JRPGs will very loosely touch on some basic Western philosophical ideas (without exploring them in any depth), wallow around in some very immature, self-indulgent wangst and then conclude with some childish "power of friendship" message.

So where do I start the argument that FF7 was the downfall of FF games and the FF6 was the last good one. Honestly if you do want a JRPG with a good serious story I would say to look there GodWood, the only real sillyness comes from how flamboyant and mustache twriling Kefka can be even though he's the best villain the FF series has had in my opinion.

Faster than a JRPG can spiral downwards in quality.
Faster than Square can re-use character archetypes.
Faster than Nobuo Uematsu could leave a company.

The only modern WRPG I've seen deliver on "political intrigue" unmolested by tons of fantastical elements is probably New Vegas. I haven't finished any Witcher games, though.

If this isn't a WvJ RPG comparison like I'm making it out to be then meh.

To me FFVII is one of those games which is best left undisturbed - fond memories (except some of the annoying fight interruptions when travelling) that would be sullied by going back - I've ruined a few games for myself by going back and playing them.

On the other hand, I know my significant other will be on it like sonic, looking to chocobo race the hell up out of everything, so I guess I'll be seeing it anyway. :D

This time around of course you can't pop the lid on your playstation cd drive while it's awarding xp and get just about as much xp as you like. :)

I
like kittens - but kittens hate chrono trigger. They say chrono trigger
looks at them funny - I suspect it's just the pixellation though.

Thanks but I already said that's one of the JRPGs I've enjoyed.

Others would be Chrono Trigger, Mother 2, Suikoden II, Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars, Paper Mario, Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, any of the Pokémon games, Dragon Quest VIII and Lost Odyssey.

Although there's a few in there that take themselves seriously most of them do not.

FFV? That was awful! The antagonist was boring, the plot paper thin and Bartz had really nothing going for him. The only good character died 3/4 in.

Damn it's rare to find someone other than me who's actually played Terranigma, nevermind merely knowing about its existence. That was in my list of top games when I was a kid, probably still is now.

I played Terranigma as well. It's quite the gem along with it's spritual prequel Soul Blazer(can't say I cared for Illusion of Gaia much).
