Edit: I really loved the original zombie mode in WaW though, much better than the later versions.

Ah, there is one I forgot. The Darkness.
It had a very slick combat system, slightly-open V:tmB-esque level design, and some seriously dark/emotional stuff. It's a cherished memory.
I'll drink to that. I wish the sequel could have held up to the original's quality.

I remember seeing the demo and watching the playthrough. I think the gameplay just seemed to game-y and was doing gore in this over-the-top way. The Original from Starbreeze felt a little more realistic(relatively speaking). The sequel wasn't bad, but it can't really compete with what Starbreeze pulled off.

No it didn't. Modern Warfare didn't do sh*t to the FPS genre. :')

I actually prefer the sequel myself. It didn't have the atmosphere of the original, but the gameplay was a significant improvement.Il Divo wrote...

Halo 1/2 for consoles
Battlefield 1942 for making vehicles a thing (and doing it well).
I need to think of a more recent game.

The only other negative I have for this game was the lousy main story.
2) Doom (1&2) - I played these games an insane amount of times on my dad's computer. I got to the final level of Doom 2 like 20 times, without knowing how to beat it. I finally beat it two years ago lol.
3) Goldeneye - My first introduction to FPS on a console. Nothing like banking a grenade around a corner and into your friend's face when he thought he was safe haha. Throwing knives only anyone? License to kill always.
4) Perfect Dark - This would have been higher on the list, but I find it really hasn't held up well over time. The graphics and controls in multiplayer are anything but smooth. I guess I'm just spoiled by modern games. Up until Halo 2, this was my favourite FPS.

The gameplay was definitely better. I liked how they diversified the functions of the Darkness tentacles and let the player use their powers more. But the art style, villain, and references to the comic series began to take a turn for the worse (imo).

Assuming you're talking about the N64 version, you do know there's a XBLA port with different control schemes (one mimicking Halo) and updated HD textures right?

Half Life for the "what-the-hell"- unfolding, ambient storytelling. (that was just a big -Wow! at the time).
Max Payne (PC) for the remorseless mood and gritty, close-quarter, frantic slaughter in slow motion.
But most of all: original Far Cry (before it became a console-shooter franchise) for it's tactical freedom. It's the pinnacle of FPS design, IMO.
Fall Out 3 (PC) because it is also a true cRPG, has much of the tactical freedom Far Cry offered, combining it with a freedom of the world, life and purpose. As the actual shooting game goes, it's not so good, since it applies a layer of randomness above your aiming.
