Unless Varric is stupid enough to merge with a spirit, he'll be fine.

Is it confirmed that Varric will be a companion in the next game? All I really took from the trailer was that he would be appearing in-game to some extent (Otherwise they wouldn't have his model rendered in the game engine).

I think It's more likely he will play a role similar to Morrigan- an important NPC, and was in the trailer to both show us what Dwarves will look like and how the graphics have progressed since the previous game.

I'd imagine he is upset by events but will put his effort into helping the player and the inquisiton restore balance, rather than try to cause more chaos like Anders did.

Varric did say "I am sick of Mages and Templars" before final battle if we ask his opinion, maybe he's a major villain in DA:I, another building will be blown up, wonder what building it could be?

Varric is basically a good hearted dwarf with fluid morals befitting a rogue. Hopefully his relationship with Hawk hasn't inspired him to become a zealot of any sort.

I admit I hope Varric isn't back mostly because I want new companions.

And this again just for emphasis. I really hated how they changed Anders for DA2. I don't think I'll ever be able to let Bioware forget that. I'm not trying to be a Dbag, It's just something that bugs me everytime I play DA2. It just stands out like a sore thumb on every playthrough. Image IPB

I agree with the above poster. I really want new companions for DAI. I don't mind Varric and his chest hair making an appearance though Image IPB

(Bioware how dare you cover up that glorious chest hair in the trailer- for shame)

I think the problem with Anders in DA2 was that by the end of Awakening, we pretty much knew everything worth knowing about the character; both personality, past, plights and quirks.
Because of this there wasn't really anything new to learn from him as a companion again, which meant that some additions to his character was needed.

I doubt this will be that much of a problem if Varric returns as a companion. While we get a good idea of what type of person he is, he isn't very dimensional. Also, much of his backstory and motivations were covered in shadow. Thus, there are many aspects of Varric that can be revealed and explored in DAI.

This however, means that he probably won't merely be the balancing element of the party, like Anders was in DAO:A, which I'm sure will ****** alot of people off. The player will have to dig deeper and reveal a darker side of his character. If he in addition is being groomed for romance (which I'm guessing (and hoping), judging by the smoldering look) this will most certainly be the case.

Are we even sure the dwarf in the trailer is indeed Varric?

Well, he was carrying Bianca....so unless the guy who made Bianca got resurrected and made another one after it was said he was unable to reproduce Bianca I would think it is Varric.

EDIT: And gave it to another beardless dwarf....yeah, too many coincedences. Gotta be Varric.

A bit late aren't you? It has been officially confirmed that it was Varric and Morrigan in the trailer (either DG or Allan said that, I can't rmb). So yeah, that's him.

On the topic, I certainly hope not. Taking the most interesting guy in DA 2, and turn him into that very same game's "the most annoying, f*cked up, sh!tty character" is a terrible move. Don't do that BioWare. Please.

I can see why that would be a concern. However at least in Awakenings Anders was still very pro-mage. The difference is that in DAA is was more snarky and veiled it in humour, whereas in DAE he just became defensive to the point where he believed everyone was attacking him or his ideology personally.

That said, simply making Varric more serious would also break part of his appeal, which is a shame because judging from the trailer that is pretty much required (otherwise his joviality and casual remarks seem flippant).

Varric was always able to appreciate serious situations, so hopefully he's not completely different in DA:I. After both Oghren in Awakening and Anders in DA2 I admit that I'm a bit concerned too, but we'll just have to wait and see. As long as Varric's personality hasn't changed dramatically, and we can learn more about him, I'll be happy to see him again.

I think you kind of hit the nail on the head there. Varric's always been a very balanced and self-aware character, unlike say, Anders, who's always suffered from a certain degree of single-mindedness. Perhaps Varric might eventually become worn down by the misery caused by the mage/templar war, but I can't see that happening without a lot of attempts on his part to pull himself back out of the gutter. It would be quite a different matter if his lightheated mannerisms were entirely for his own sake, then he'd only be letting himself down by succumbing to the mysery, but they aren't. One of the big reasons why he tells all those jokes and stories is to put people, especially his friends/family, at ease, to take them away from their troubles for a moment, and maybe even help them rethink their more rash decisions (see, any conversations he has with Anders in act 3). Varric would never let someone he cared about down if he could help it, loyalty's practically become his MO, so I'm pretty confidant that so long as one of his friends/loved ones still lives, some portion of the same old Varric will still remain.

I doubt Varric will be a companion, a major npc sure but he's been the focus of a full game and had his back story explored in a comic book. Anders and to a lesser extent Merrill had a bit of story left that could be looked into., but Varric and, since we're on the subject, Isabela have had their stories fleshed out quite a bit that we'd just be going over old territory.

That's not to say that it can't happen, but it's unlikely. We also have to take into account that he lost the love of his life and is still rather snarky.

As long as Varric's personality doesn't change as dramatically as Anders' did in DAII then I will be happy to have him back.

Highly doubtful, he doesn't have nearly a big enough chip on his shoulder for that.

Not confirmed as a companion, Chris mentioned he had a role to play in the story though.

Yeah, without the whole, merging with and corrupting a spirit of Justice, I don't expect Varric to dramatically change his behavior or attitude (or voice actor).

Well, as long as they don't completely butcher his character I'm good.

Though their trackrecord isn't that great.
