Because if she was, people would be asking "why isn't she straight?" Then Bioware would have its hands full with that mess.

Think about it. If Bioware did make a Gay human that would bring up a lot of controversy. People would get mad and file lawsuits against them. They don't want this which is why they made Liara alien to appeal to the anti-gay audience.
Lol, lawsuits? On what legal grounds? Gross in the first degree? I don't deny there might be some repercussions amongst those who generally rate video games as distasteful anyway, but there was really no buzz about Dragon Age's sex scenes and even the Mass Effect controversy was manufactured because Fox News didn't have a war to talk about that week.
Look, the bottom line is this. The game comes out in a week, we will play it and see how the story turned out. Either way, I think the general feeling is that if BIoware couldn't plot justify homosexual romances, then honestly maybe that makes a bit of sense. The problem people are having is that it, right now, feels like to some people that such things were removed not out of consideration for story, but out of "fear" of being weird or different. We will find out in a week!

They might get mad, but file lawsuits? On what? You can't sue someone just because there's something in a game you dislike.

I guess all those succesful TV shows with homosexual characters must not be normal then! We don't like no queers rounds these parts!!!
No mean to be rough to you personally, but come on it is 2010, the first decade of the 21st century is over. Folks, if we can't have brief scenes and dialogue that includes stuff that would make some Middle Americans/Englanders upset, then we are really bad off.

I agree, I think they're doing their best to keep both parties fairly happy, like with Liara, even if Casey said that about it not being a F/F. She obviously looks like a female and I think it says in the codex that she is, they are just making them aliens so its not as ZOMG and scary to the homophobes/close-minded people who play Mass Effect. They want to keep as much fanbase as they can. No matter how large it already is.

I think Bioware dropped the ball on having any single character's sexuality pre programmed. I think to add life to the character, to add dimension, to add value to the player's stats it should be possible to charm the pants/panties off any character if your numbers are sufficient. Each character could have a specific preference towards sexuality but the player could effect that by how they use thier stat points. For example in DAO Morrigan is strictly male/female only, but if i have a female character with maxed persuasion and 40 cunning i could get Morrigan to switch sides. This would require me the player to make a decision to forgo a few points in another stat to allow the option. I would have to decide on a weaker character to foster a relationship with Morrigan, forcing the player to make choices is a running theme in these games. Just a shout out from the cheap seats.

That's silly. You can't charm someone to the point they switch sexual preferences, it doesn't work that way. That would insult homosexuals more than anything.

*sigh* That's not what i'm saying. I'm more so on your side. Look at it like this. The NBA pretty popular. Majority of the audience? White. Majoirty of the players...black. Now if the NBA was say 60/40, or even 73/30 intstead of like 80/20 would it be more popular..of course. That's why football and baseball are more popular.
With a game you can alienate the majority of consumers. Take Bayonetta..FANTSTIC game. Of my 30 xbox friends one person has heard of ir. It's wahy DMC$ should've been. But Dante was male character, more identifed with him and it sold more.
By adding a *** charater you alienate an audience. Bi, not so much. Alot of gamers are ignorenat, and just want mean who like women vice versa. All i'm saying is it's fruitless to get mad over a meduim not catering to a minority in gaming at the expense of others, especially in gaming.

I know, I toned down my comment from earlier. My point is this, our politics in the real world are small and narrowminded enough. if in a Science Fiction game we can't even step away from a certain part of society's incredibly closed off moral code for fear of offending that part of society, then we are really limiting imagination and even our luxury's (videogames, other multimedia) are being infiltrated by such mindsets. Its more frustrating than it is anything else.

Hey, sorry I was watching a movie. Hope I didn't miss anything. Did the gay people win the forums yet? I just want everyone to know that I fully support use of a triple-A mainstream RPG video game to promote real-world personal agendas that don't have anything to do with the in-game story and background. It seems right somehow that lesbians get their own video game, so why not Mass Effect 2? After all that's what the in-game story is all about, right?
Oh, I'm sorry you didn't get the memo that talks about all the guys that play girls in video games. Or the memo that guys like video games and guy like girls and guys like lesbians.
Sorry this is all so new to you.

And then someone will counter with "Why isn't so-and-so Straight?" Let the writers tell the story the way they want it. If it's not in the character personality as written, then there's no reason for it to be there.
