We saw explosives in Dragon Age Awakening, but they were lyrium based. The Qunari up to Dragon Age 2 are the only people with gunpowder and cannon. There was a quest in DA2 to find the recipe for gunpowder but it was ultimately unsuccessful.

My favorite thing to do in most shooters is to run up to the enemy like an idiot and blow them away with my shotgun.
