Why do desire demons have a female body?

I consider semi-nude female desire demons to be the kind of casual sexism that assumes that the gamer is a heterosexual male. It isn't the kind of thing that would make me boycott the game - as a female gamer, I've seen far worse examples of sexism in games - but every time I see it, I can't help thinking "Oh, look, here we go again."
Granted, there are cases where a naked female makes sense - the bewitched templar in DAO - but there are a lot more places where the intended target is the protagonist, and some of them prefer men.
And Mouse was Pride.

Yep, totally agree. I think my first reaction on seeing the desire demon in DAO was something like, "Oh brother."berelinde wrote...

Hmm I suppose they are. How annoying, I had viewed dragon age as one of the more original fantasy franchises.
explain "orginal fantasy" cause so far in reality not that orginal, Tho i think i'm one of the few people who has attempted to read TVtropes, and so far as looked into just about every religion there is. Also at least looked at most fantasy settings.
There is always a "Temptress" kind of demon, in almost all culitres.
I considered dragon age to be original because of the fairly unusual culture they gave to dwarves, as well as the Qunari race.
you mean the Politcal backstabbing and overall, arogance of the people.... meh
As for the Qunari.... I think its more based on a IRL religon that I will not name because last time I named it got my post deleted...

But I meant more that the actual race is original. Dwarves we've seen before, elves we've seen before. Kossith? New.

Because resources. And I'm not sure an Incubus would fly with a lot of gamers.
So don't advertise it. Keep it hush hush from hype junkies and pseduo-machos so they buy the game. I think even the dullest lobotomite can look past their own nonsense if the game is good.

It's very VERY loosely based on Islam. VERY.

Acorrding to the Dragon age Wiki, they are simular to Warhammer Dwarves with pretty much simular backstories, (kinda surprized Games Workshop didn't sue BW cause of it. )
Eh, its more of just a strait lace, 100% by the book, kind of culture. It coud also be considered a miltary culture as well. considering There is a place for everyone....
Or its a twist on the Utopina dream by... I think Plato... (i think)

What's the point of being the avatar of desire without looking atleast mildly desirable...

Exactly! To gay men and straight women (essentially half of the population) the desire demon does not look desirable!

You do realise there's no practical way to have the game recognize this without spending resources on it that could be better used elsewhere?
We see the demon's base form. A character who wants to see his/her wife/husband/lover is most likely seeing the person they want to see (the demon takes their form). If what the character desires is something else (power, some object, wealth, whatever) the demon tempts them with these things.
It doesn't matter what the demon actually looks like. Remember that we as gamers see what is actually going on, we don't necessarily see what the characters in the game are seeing. So if you really want to you can decide that your character sees some really hot man, because that's what your character desires.
The demon must have a form for us gamers to see and they chose a form that shows some twisted version of what is generally assumed to be an attractive female. They could have gone for a male form, it doesn't matter one way or the other since the demon screws with the characters' heads anyway.
Regardless what form they went for some gamers would not find that form attractive.

@DatOneFanboy
lol, females are more attractive than men? How could you possibly begin to qualify that statement?
well to me at least they are
and:
there are studies that say, that people react better to females interacting with the say in shopping centers or as a sales person
greetings LAX
ps: yes there are sexy men (even i can acknowledge that and i would call myself straight) - but i find women more pleasing to look at (at least if they do not wear things like evening gowns...impractical clothing bah!)

The majority probably are.Nefla wrote...
For the same reason every Asari hit on you in the Mass Effect series and Shepards of either gender reacted automatically with an "aww yeaaaaah" face: because they assume the player is a straight male.
The female gamer population is undoubtedly growing but still the minority, and gay male gamers are an even smaller one.

Second, the demographic for AAA games produced by Bioware is heavily weighted towards heterosexual men. (Usually between the ages of 18-25 I would bet) Therefore the Desire Demon was fashioned after something the majority would find desirable.
Third, regardless of what the gaming media would like to believe not every game has to be a social commentary dealing with politics in the real world and not every collection of pixels needs to be an upstanding, rational, politically correct, and respectable representation of some sexuality, gender, ethnicity, race, et al.

Problem with that is unless the alternate form is simply using a regular model of one of the species, extra resources and space is more limited by that demon's alternate form.dragondreamer wrote...
I'd like to see different versions of the Desire Demons, doesn't even have to be based on what the pc is into. Maybe they're responding to someone else in the party, haha. To be honest, either way, my pcs would still be creeped out by demony things.
I do admit it would be interesting if the model changed depending on who the PC flirted or romanced though, and the female form was the default.

But there is a certain level where politics does become important in games.

You cannot in most games. Might have something to do with those demographics again....
