So I'm going through my first play through . I plan on playing in Hard, not Nightmare. To me, DA is about the playing of a role not necessarily being super overpowered. After much thought I'm thinking a mage that focuses on entropy and spirit. The vision here is a mage capable of controlling an entire army while contributing damage supported by other party members. A mage general if you will. My question is pretty simple: is there enough variations and tactic that this will be fun? Will I feel like I contribute significantly with this idea? What other schools would compliment it? What specializations? I plan on using another party member for healer.

Thanks in advance!!

Cone of Cold should be your first goal. Blizzard isn't bad either for some battle field control.

Death Hex and Death Cloud make a nice combo With Death Magic as a heal. Sleep and Walking Nightmare is a good combo more allied enemies. All Entropy.

Animated Dead and Virulent walking bomb is a decent combo with Death Syphon on replenishing mana. All are Spirit

Honestly all skills except the Anti-Magic Burst row in Spirit and the Mass Paralysis row in Entropy are good.

On your Healer I'd add the combo of Stinging swarm with Petrify. If your warden can add Death Hex its a terrifying crit show. If you have Crushing Prison it shatters those petrified or frozen in case of cone of cold or blizzard.

A second combo there is Grease and fire ball or Inferno.

Basically your healer. Wynne more then likely should be about creation skills petrify row and inferno. If you can add tempest do so. If you want to make her a mage tank go Spirit healer and Arcane warrior or so I heard.

I am only recently doing my mage playthrough. Going Arcane Warrior and spirit healer/Blood mage.
haven't decided.

I think your response is to Dragon Age Origins. These are the DA2 forums...

Entropy is fun for me with Hex of torment although that's about the only entropy spell I need. I've never really used spirit like walking bomb. Sticking to your concept should be fun but there are more interesting spells at least I would find it to be.

Horror, horror, and more horror! One of the best spells in the Entropy tree. It works on huge number of baddies, and takes them out of commission for a while. I often use it on Desire Demons, while I kill off their adds. Hex of Torment/Death Hex is also good...give your companions a chance to take advantage of the critical chance. :)

As for Spirit, the Walking Bomb and subsequent upgrades are good, but they can be tricky to exploit. I think there are some builds around the forum that could give you a good idea how to truly take advantage of those spells.

I think this is a good idea,I also would rather play a charecter that fills my perception of what a mage should be.i played through this game way to many times lol, however I have never found a mage style I actually enjoyed enough to finish the game with.

Until I decided not to copy off the popular "melt your face"mage guides.i decided to make a FADE mage I didn't care how strong i was or if I was able to 1 shot enemies.all I focused on was torture horrific nightmares once they screamed enough I'd place them in a crushing prison.

At first I really felt weak, but the build was still fun.i made errors with my companion builds and tactics.i normally build companions to support my charecter and it wasn't working at all! Then I build all my companions to deal damage while I just horrified the enemy they would crush the enemy before I could use 3 skills (hard mode, not nightmare).

My mage of course used entropy (hex of torment, horror, mis hex with upgrades),arcane ( mind blast, crushing prison upgrades) ,creation (everything only upgrading haste and heroic aura)then spirit healer and I only went healing aura.i did a little force mage but I didn't like it to much with this build.

I really love this mage,I felt like my team didnt depend on me to do high damage to win a fight we always had to work together, they depended on me to cripple the enemy, paralyze powerful enemies a supply sustains and buffs.

My complains I played with were avaline, fenris, and varric.though I really don't like fenris he played his role well!

I hope this gives you some ideas to help with your build.sry for any misspelling.

Aside from the "D.D. / A.O.E." builds out there, it is "difficult" to play any other mage, though they are all quite fun if you enjoy mages.

The hardest part of playing a mage is using your skills to the best of their abilities. Like Potato Man above, he used Horror and let his Companions do the killing. He had fun with it.. myself I think I would get kinda bored.

The Force Mage, opens up ALOT of interesting Combos IMHO, but your companions can mess it up on you if you don't micro manage them.

I am seeking a Solo NM mage build.. well semi solo as I will need a rogue to unlock things, and disarm traps, but I am thinking Varric as he is the earliest rogue you get, not to mention quite powerful if built properly.

I had though BM / Force / Entropy would be good, but the overall dmg output isnt that great, and the enemies swarm you and your companions before they are dead. and it makes for some serious button mashing, and lots of swearring to get through some of the upper levels, not to mention the Qunari fight(s) and the Final fights... YEOWCH... did it, but I think I set a new high score for Wounds and potion usage for a single playthough.. LOL

Dameos I think you should try my mage ( if you still play).though I would suggest switching varric out and putting in Isabella.with the right tactics she'll destroy!!!

I still haven't figured out how properly work a blood mage lol maybe because I haven't took the time.the damage compared to enemy mages just seem lack luster.thats why I play (not a healer) a support mage.with all the buff and debuffs to
Enemies it seems all my team does 700-1k damage a hit.

Only thing bad is when there is swarms of enemies alot of archers really hurts this build.but boss type fights just seem easy.

Dameos how good is blood mage damage???
