So I recently decided to give KOTOR another playthrough as it's probably one of my favourite games to date and pretty much the sole reason I'm such a fan of Bioware. Anyway, I installed the game from the Star Wars Best of PC compilation onto my relatively new W8 laptop. Everything installs fine but when I try to load it up I just see the LucasArts logo then Bioware then the legal thing with Malak's face, then it all goes black and I get an error message telling me the program has crashed. I tried compatibility mode, which didn't work. I tried to remove the intro movies, but I think I may have moved the wrong or something, at any rate it didn't help. I eventually got it to work using the SWConfig in the program files and disabling movies. This got me to the main menu and into the game but now I can't edit the graphics settings or change the resolution without the game crashing, so I'm stuck with 1024x768. Otherwise the game ran fine until the Taris undercity where there were random kind of lines going through the sky and etc.

Aside from one rather annoying problem with W8 that takes me back to the desktop while playing a game which makes this particular game crash when I reselect it, everything went fine....until Dantooine. Outdoors on Dantooine there are weird lines running through the sky like the Undercity as well as missing textures both in the sky and pretty much everywhere else and all sorts of graphics issues. The game is also randomly crashing all over Dantooine, rendering the game practically unplayable.

Is there any fix whatsoever this? Would it work on W7? I hear the compilation is meant to be W7 compatible and I'm getting similar problems with KOTOR2 so I'm considering installing W7 on my laptop and using that. If that isn't going to work though I'm just going to have to buy the Xbox version and use them on my 360, though I'd rather not as I want to use some of the awesome mods for these games.

It sounds as though you have a laptop that only has Intel's terribly bad excuse for video instead of a games-capable laptop. If so, you need to consult with various groups of masochists who think the Intel Smoke and Mirrors trickery is wonderful, if you just tweak this or that, and add multiple gimmick services to make up for the many deficiencies.  Neither KotOR nor NWN were ever intended to run on anything as wierd as those things are.

Yeah true the graphics card in this thing is pretty poor, though it is able to manage other games without any trouble like Battlefront, Battlefront 2, Empire at War, Civ V etc. KOTOR and TSL are the only games I've had any trouble with.
