Hey guys, so I've cracked out the BG series and I really want to play as a Kensai (no multi/duel class), but opinions seem really mixed
I plan on using a party of 4 for the most part, jaheira, edwin, thief char for bg2, unknown as of yet for bg1
I'm just going to play on normal this time around, I plan on using katanas and I am wondering things like what my stats should look like besides maxing out str con and dex.
Also in terms of gear, is there anyway I can make myself act as the tank for the group?
Any tips would be helpful, if it turns out impossible I will try beserker perhaps but I am really keen to play Kensai, thanks in advance :)

Solo kensai is distinctly possible, dwarf works well as saving throws really help. I've had several no-reload attempts through BG1 and well into BG2.

In a party there are several buffs a cleric, druid or mage can cast to help the kensai. Hard to say more without adding a load of spoilers, but unless you have mods installed you won't even see a katana in BG1.

I've played through before so spoilers don't matter :) So you soloed pure kensai? Wow, what weaps/ sort of gear did you use? was it on normal? I have bg2tweaks and bgt installed so katanas should pop up

I play on core rules so random hitpoints.

Try this album, a few screenshots and some videos - e.g. a single-buff run from Slythe to Sarevok. He got to the demon knights in the underdark, might have got another one into ToB but not sure.

Perhaps the most important thing for a pure Kensai is a top cleric to keep them healed and otherwise magically shielded. Viconia, of course, is the best for this, but Anomen or even Jaheira will carry it off. But that NPC will do little besides tend to the PC's needs, so your party of 4 will really be a party of 3. I've played it this way in almost vanilla BG2, ToB at Core with a party of 6 (really 5), so it does work, but it bugged me that my PC needed a nursemaid, particularly before he got HLA's.

A solo kensai is a match for nearly all enemies in single combat, but needs to be careful to avoid groups attacking at once. Buffs using shield, II and mirror image are all usable on a regular basis and make a big difference. Green scrolls and potions can be used to make some of the trickier fights easy.

In a BGT party the kensai should be no trouble at all. If you take along an NPC to act as a tank then your kensai will more than hold his own in the party even with no buffs at all.

Each to his own play style, but it still bothers me philosophically that an "ultimate fighter" type needs to have a "tank" big brother to draw the heat.
