So you're upset that there are casual watchers then?

I guess I can understand why that'd be a problem. Like there are people who haven't memorized every rune in PMMM and don't know every witch name or VA in the show off by heart. I wish I could just throttle these people.

Plebs. All of them.

Oh no, its more of a pet peeve than anything.

Same thing with A Song of Ice and Fire readers and Game of Thrones viewers. If you read ASOIAF back in the day and came across someone else who did, you had a fairly good chance you could talk to someone who knew what they were talking about. But after Game of Thrones came out, now you have people that don't have a clue about anything and still think Daenerys' name is Khaleesi.

I mentioned the cosplayers because apparently a friend was cosplaying at some event, saw a TON of RWBY cosplayers, went up to many of them and asked if they had a roosterteeth.com account, and got responses along the lines of,

"Whats Roosterteeth?"

"No"

"Roosterteeth's a company?"

"I just watch on Youtube"

etc etc

Basically she didn't get to connect with any of them and I was like, "WAT"

To be fair you should see it from their PoV though.

For the show there's a lot of characters initially so it can be tough to remember all their names at first. Khaleesi is what she is called through most of S1 from what I remember so I can understand that. If they're a few seasons in and still haven't realized that's just a title then I'd say they should be paying closer attention since she's a main player in the show.

As for the cosplay thing I've known people who cosplay from shows and games they've never even played just because they really like the outfit design. It's better when they're fans of the show and character they're doing of course but I can still sort of understand it.

Plus I can't blame people for watching it on YouTube or CR. Lots of shows like that get put up on youtube or in some cased the YT one is just the first that pops up when they go searching to watch it online.

Someone on CR thinking it's a Japanese show originally isn't unreasonable either since that's what almost all their shows are.

Iono just my opinion on it. We all have our pet peeves when it comes to the shows we enjoy the most though when it comes to the fandom.

The real pet peeve for me is that these people haven't done their homework on the thing they're into so they say things that make no sense or don't delve past a certain point making things harder for everyone else.

If I like something, I look into it. Research. I want to know as much as possible so I can have a solid discussion about it with someone else. I'll naturally be at a disadvantage if its not something I started with ages ago or right from the beginning but at least effort would be made.

I just see too many people putting no effort at all. For so many, GoT is just violence+sex. Or RWBY is just "that show on youtube with the colors and the girls". I can't stand that this makes having a discussion about these subjects harder to find.

Doing cosplay doesn't automatically make you a huge fan of the show though. I mean I can understand if the person actually said " I love that show!" And then doesn't know about RT, that'd be a bit odd. But again, with cosplay it might just be they saw the character, loved the outfit design and decided to go with it which for me doesn't necessarily make them need to research the show that much.

Conversation is great but that's why I rely on finding online discussion with people who like it the same way as you. I've talked to PMMM fans who loved the show but don't even know how inspired by Faust it is, or know many of the other inspirations.

Thats exactly the case. Its strange.

But yeah, there's no right or wrong way to go about it, it just sucks that there's such disparity. The people who research can't talk to people who don't because there's no two-way discussion to be had, and the people who don't research can't talk to people who do because they'll be spoiled on things they might not have learned yet.

I actually appreciate when I hear a cosplayer say that they won't consider cosplaying a character until they've experienced the media that the character comes from(book, movie, television show, video game). That means they'll only come out as a character they can talk about. I dig that.

I don't go to conventions but if I did, went up to a RWBY cosplayer, and they didn't even know the characters, I'd have to restrain myself from going, "Well then whats the point?"

But I assume the people my friend ran into at least watched RWBY. They just know nothing of Roosterteeth. Which is still really silly and incredibly unfortunate.

I think it's better when the person knows more about the thing they're cosplaying but really it isn't hard to understand that they just saw the outfit and liked it enough to go with it. Especially when it comes to dealing with cosplayers who do tons of outfits and put in a great deal of effort into it to. For some people cosplay is like a profession. It would almost be like saying a shop keeper at a comic book story shouldn't sell comics or mangas he hasn't read, not entirely the best example but just trying to say that the way they view it is different and not necessarily wrong.

Another example I could make for the cosplay thing is like I've known people who collect Gundam models without actually watching much Gundam shows simply because they like the models.

More in depth conversation is always good and I appreciate others who take time to research shows they show even a vague interest in but at the same time for some that sort of thing is just not what they enjoy about it and I can't objectively day they're wrong for it.

Well *most* shows and games I consider my favorites I research up on a fair bit there's a couple animes in my top 10 I still wouldn't be able to tell you the studio who produced it, the main writer and the VAs in it off the top of my head. Pretty much anything in my top 3-5 I know a lot about but there's plenty of shows I like enough to even buy the DvDs/Blurays and still not research that much, particularly since there's so many great shows out there and time is limited (especially so nowadays)

To be fair, Rooster Teeth's a pretty special case with the way they operate. If you're discovering RWBY on Crunchyroll for example, shows you find there aren't usually being made by production companies as fan oriented and varied as RT, so looking into things further can't exactly be standard procedure, as you're probably not going to get a whole lot out of it.

Already did. Its an apt comparison of "potentially having tons of knowledge on certain material" vs. "potentially not".

Just like some RWBY fans know all there is to know versus not knowing much at all, the same exists with the books vs the show. Book readers tend to know a great deal whereas show viewers either know a ton or don't know much at all. All based on how they're exposed to the source material.

So I got caught up by watching on Netflix. Which actually makes it hard to tell it's even a series. Fortunately, I was already familiar with roosterteeth, but if i hadn't been, I probably would've just thought I'd stumbled across some cool, new art style anime movies.

I can see how some cosplayers might not be fully informed. Especially if they're into it for the costume or are just filling out a group. Typically if you're gonna go around saying you're a fan of something, you might want to learn more (and if it's something I really like, I'll want to do that on my own), but there's also something to be said for a more casual approach. It makes things more accessible. No one likes to feel like there's a barrier to getting into something they're interested in, or that they aren't cool enough to be a part of the fandom or be told they aren't a real fan.
