I've had the urge to play through this again after ripping through it three times when it came out and not touching it since. Consequently I haven't bought any DLC. I've already decided that I probably won't be interested in the Felicia Day DLC, so that leaves me with the question of whether to buy Legacy.
So my question is, how well does Legacy fit into the rest of the game? Would it be a good addition to someone's first playthrough in a few years? It seems like it adds background to Hawke; is it more isolated info or does it bear importance to other important plot points in the game? Any good moments with your party members?
Thanks in advance.
Coming back to DA2 - haven't bought any DLC

It adds a fair bit of background about Hawke's family, particularly Malcolm, who's largely an enigma.
There are quite a few good moments with companions, though Bethany/Carver, Varric and Anders all get short quests specifically relating to them. The dialogue tailors itself to whichever point in the game you actually play it.
The story itself is isolated from DA2's mage/templar/qunari/demons plot, but it does have some major implications for the whole Dragon Age universe.
The biggest downside is that the end boss fight requires a LOT of micro-management of your party and can be quite long.

Thanks for the information, that was really helpful. Should I assume it's best to play it in Act 1 then for the Bethany/Carver quest? Or can you still play that quest even after they leave?

The quest that involves Bethany/Carver will still happen, but they get special items from it and the end dialogue is a bit more meaningful because it's basically a conversation about your dad.
I should note that both Legacy and MotA give you the ability to recruit Bethany/Carver into your party in Act 2 and 3 provided they are alive. Regardless of whether they went to the Wardens or the Circle/Templars, they are available if they're alive. They become like a guest party member and leave again once the DLC is over. So no, you don't necessarily have to play the DLC in Act 1 to use them.

Wow. That's pretty darn cool. In that case I might play it in Act 2 just to have Bethany make an appearance in each act. Thanks.

Note that Legacy can be fairly difficult for low level (act 1) characters - the secret boss in particular.
