Some years ago I noticed a clip on youtube where the warden encounters some villagers who stand around a tree stump that has an axe in it. They speak something about whoever can lift the axe, becomes the king/queen of Ferelden or was it all of Thedas. Im not sure.

I checked from dragon age wiki and if I understood correctly, this encounter should happen between Denerim and Brecilian areas. In all my playthroughs I have NEVER had this encounter. I have tried several times to travel between those places and nothing happens.

Is there some trick to trigger this encounter? How can this encounter happen?

It's an extremely rare random encounter.

It is extremely rare. I've had it happen twice in all my playthroughs. No special trick, though.

It is extremely rare. If you really want to see it in your game and you are playing on a PC, you can enable the developer console and trigger it that way. The wiki has all the information on doing so. :wizard:

One woman in that encounter looks like Eleanor Cousland, hehehe. Anyway, you can use the console as mouse mentioned. The command is "runscript zz_ran_debug".

What does "extremely rare" mean though? A .08% chance on every travel? The wiki seems to say it only shows up on travel to the Brecilian areas- or just the Dalish camp- and when traveling solo. Does that reflect what others have experienced? I've never seen this yet despite loads of travel during 5 full playthroughs and many abandoned ones. Maybe it's not rare so much as it just requires very specific conditions- like being a human warrior above 15th level traveling alone from Denerim to the Dalish Camp or some such- plus owning the game over two yrs or having completed the DLCs or gotten every Achievement.

Unmodded, the trigger chance for Axameter is 1 in 100. (For comparison, the Starmetal and Treacherous Path shade ambush encounters have a 2 in 100 chance.)   An examination of the toolset files shows no additional requirements (such as plot conditions) for the event to trigger.

The first time I ever got Axameter was with a female Surana, and that game was not modded to increase the likelihood. I've also gotten it with a Dalish rogue and an Amell; the former was unmodded as well, while the latter was modded to up the chance. She also ran around the map a lot. (She and Old Tegrin were well aquainted.)

Interesting... I think in all my playthroughs, I've only NOT gotten the starmetal once.

Thanks for the stat- so a 1% chance. How does that square with forced encounters- like Zev's hello or that abomination quest or Leliana's ambush? I mean, if you roll the 1% does the forced encounter ruin it? I wonder how the roll is done, particularly as there are many different encounters on the potential list early on as I hit every quest depot. Does it make a 0 slot for forced encounters and a designated 43-46 slot for Old Tegrin? The axe encounter must be slot 13.

Yes, without mods for probability increase, despite the equal 2% chance between them, I've never not gotten the Superman starmetal one but only gotten that shades one a single time. Hmph. My current playthrough I'm using the Mutator mod to increase the probability (by however much), so maybe I'll finally see everything. Why would the shade encounter be rare? It's not like it's got any rare items... Funny though that I got the "Set Foot in Every Area of the Game" Achievement though since I never managed to see the King Arthur sketch. (Then again no one would get it if we had to get to Jowan's last encounter in the woods.) I want my Monty Python, spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs, and spam!

@Bhryaen, pretty sure there's an if-elseif-then tree that determines what fires. The first rule to be met will be the one to fire.

IF (leaving Origin and going to Ostagar) LOAD OSTAGAR
IF (leaving Wilds and going to Lothering AND Warden != Cousland AND Dog Cured) LOAD DOG ENCOUNTER
IF (leaving Lothering for first time) LOAD DREAM SEQUENCE
IF ( ...keep checking conditions for fixed encounters...)
ELSE IF (roll for random encounter, consult table, remove non-Tegrin entry from table once executed)
ELSE nothing happens, arrive at destination

I have played through a ridiculous number of times. I have only ever once gotten Axameter. Conversely, I have only ever once NOT gotten starmetal. I think the %'s are off. There's a 2% chance you won't get meteor metal (in my experience) and about a .005% chance of getting Axameter. It's about the same as getting the Warden's shield to drop. There are some items reported to be in the game, I have yet to see drop.

Sadly, Wynnes gear, all of it, was the last set of items to go missing :/

Oh, by the way, remember the story about who Zevran's father was? A woodcutter? Hehe

I only got that encounter once, and I only knew about it because I read of it. It supposedly will only trigger if you travel from Denerim to the Brecilian Forest Outskirts (the Dalish camp). So I went to Denerim Market District, saved my game and traveled to the B. Forest Outskirts. If it didn't trigger I would just reload, I had to do this several times to eventually get it. Overall a funny encounter, and ironically I only got it on my male Human Noble who became prince-consort.
