the only shield i can equip is the small shield and all the other shields are blacked out like the dwarven large round shield same for example and if it helps i'm useing the famliy sword i'm a level 8 and a human warrior did i just not upgrade the right thing and like i said i'm new just got it yesterday so if some one can tell me it would help a lot thanks

If you hover your mouse over a shield, you will see a description text on the item,
on one line it say
requires: xx strength
where xx is a nr stretching from nuffin up to at least 42,
the better the shield, the more strength it require to wield it.
The most demanding shield skill require dexterity 26, so pour strength after that,
and some constitution, and when you get to the fade, remember to press really fast
on the statues that gives more points, especially the strength fountain,
you may get from 2 to 20 extra points, as opposed to the single point if you are slow,
it helps greatly to press F5 (quicksave), and start pressing quickly while the game is saving
on one line it say

I don't think the skill bonus should be influenced, by how fast I press on the fountains.

He is entirely new to the game and will appreciate the game better if he is stronger, and who knows,
maybe the developers wanted to reward skills, be it tactics setup or fast clicking.
More importantly, he is at a severe disadvantage as he dont know what armor & weapons he should go for,
or even where to find them, this game gives a massive penalty to poor equipment, armor in particular
