And honestly when it comes to singleplayer FPS, he's right. Serious Sam 3 is the only modern FPS I can remember that recently came that doesn't bull**** me around with constant scripted events, weapon carry limit, regenerating health and kills me if I step out of the "combat zone"

Video.

He mostly seems to spend 15 minutes talking about level design with a bit about weapon variety of modern military shooters.

As much fun as I have with the old school FPS games these things are all tools and like any tool they should not be completely disregarded, but when used they should be used properly.

Borderlands uses the whole loot obsession to give you a reason to explore, but at the same time also has scripted events, a weapon limit, and regenerating shields.

A lot of the problems can be traced back to people trying to mimic somebody else who successfully used these tools in the past without understanding what made it work so well in the first place.

Just like how after World of Warcraft became big a bunch of companies wanted to make a hotkey MMO, and how many of those attempts ultimately failed.

I was thinking that, too.
