Mechwarrior 4 is not a shooter. I would categorize it as a simulation, much like a flight sim. In this case it is a bot sim. ;)

Edit: Although you shoot things, you pilot the bot, much like you pilot a plane in a flight sim.

Meh, I suppose.  The word "simulation" has double usage in games, so I get confused.  It's be awhile since flight sims were a thing, so I kinda forgot the "sim" genre really existed outside of "The Sims / Sim Earth / Sim City" style simulation.

All the other Mechwarrior games should go on the list as well.

Neuromancer - Adventure

Why do I not know about this? Image IPB Is it based on the book and is it any good?

It's old-ish?  It was from Interplay and it is one of my favorite games of all time.  It got me obsessed with BBS's and e-mail and such before they "really" existed, let alone the WWW.

I haven't played them, but would the "Red Faction" games be considered sci-fi? (And are they any good?)

Yup. It is considered to be SF. It plays on Mars around 2070. The first one is certainly above average. There is still info about these games on the net.

We kept it a secret all those years. :P

Yes. It's supposed to be loosely based on Gibson's book. In 1988 it was considered to be a great game.

Neuromancer on Wikipedia.

Cool, thanks for the info! Image IPB Although keeping the game's existence a secret was mean and unjustified... Image IPB

Yeah, that was a little before my gaming career started (born '84), but based on the source material, the concept and the people involved it sounds like it should've been quite a good experience back in the day.

Strike Suit Zero (flight sim, I guess)

Gameplay and story, from the accounts I've read, are pretty mediocre, but it's pretty neat visually and has nice trailer music, so there's that.

Ah, it appears older games are acceptable (FreeSpace 2, etc.)
I would highly recommend Homeworld (plus expansion Cataclysm) and Homeworld 2.
Space RTS, woohoo!

Yes. The first AC plays 5 years in the future (2012). The later games also take place in that year. There is device, which allows one to experience ancestral memories, and that is essential to the story. They are also using holographic pictures of a species pre-dating humanity to predict the apocalypse of 2012.

NOTE: Will be adding a "MMO" category...please note that to be a true MMO or MMORPG it must require online to play. Thus making games like Starcraft stay in their current category. That way no new players are completely confused. If you notice a game that I have added to a category that requires online to play please let me know so that I may move it.

AC is more historical fiction than SciFI.

Thats the kind of opinion I had. Looking forward to more people discussing this here.

(If the majority thinks otherwise, I will add it for sure. This thread is to serve the community and to do that efficiently I have to listen to all the points of view)

Thank you guys! Amazing people and great sci-fi fans.

I strongly disagree. The fact that large parts of the events take place in the past does not mean it is not SF. Also, the main story does not take place in the past. It takes place in 2012, which is 5 years after the initial release date of AC1 (2007). Also, there is technology used to experience that past, which, because that technology does not exist, cannot be historically correct and is more like a traditional SF plot mechanism.

See this quote:

Wikipedia wrote...

The Assassin's Creed games take place in 2012, and feature Desmond Miles, a bartender who is a descendant of several lines of prominent Assassins; though raised as an Assassin, he fled his nomadic family to seek out a more common lifestyle. He is initially kidnapped by the megacorporation Abstergo Industries, the modern-day face of the Knights Templar who are aware of Desmond's lineage. Desmond is forced to use the "Animus", a device that allows him to experience his ancestral memories. Abstergo is seeking to discover the location of several artifacts, or "Pieces of Eden", that hold great power, to control mankind and alter its fate, bringing humanity into a single unified group. Desmond also encounters a small team of modern-day Assassins; agreeing to work with them, Desmond uses their version of the Animus (the Animus 2.0) to continue to experience the memories of his ancestors to discover the locations of additional Pieces of Eden so they can be recovered before Abstergo can do so. While experiencing these memories, some of their abilities are genetically leaked into Desmond, known as the Bleeding Effect, giving him some of the Assassin skills of his predecessors at the cost of living with multiple sets of memories and personalities in his mind.

Within the Animus, Desmond explores the memories of Assassins Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad, an initially disgraced Assassin working to redeem himself during the Third Crusade; Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Assassin in Italy during the late 15th and early 16th centuries of the Renaissance; and Ratohnhaké:ton, otherwise known as Connor, a half-Mohawk, half-British Assassin during the American Revolution. Throughout these events, Desmond learns of allusions to the prophetic end of the world in 2012 from a former Animus test subject, Subject 16, as well as from holographic figures of a species pre-dating humanity. Many years ago a massive solar flare nearly wiped out all life and a second threatens to do the same. With the second solar flare fast approaching, it is up to Desmond to use the memories of his ancestors to acquire their knowledge, learn the truth and find the Pieces of Eden to save humanity.

I agree with xNYROx here. One or even two SF elements doesn't make the game SF. Its main theme is "Historical". There are plenty of SF games out there, so we don't need to stretch this genre too far.

Back on topic.

COPS 2170: The Power of Law  -  RTS/Tactcal RPG

Freedom Force - RTS/Tactcal RPG
Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich - RTS/Tactcal RPG
(as much as I hate everything "Superheroes" related, the gameplay of Freedom Force is brilliant).

Metro 2033 - FPS
(not sure about this one, the book which this game is based on is categorised as a post-apocaliptic SF)

Star Wars: Galaxies - MMORPG

I didn't think Freedom Force would be quite the "sci-fi" category, but it is an awesome game.

And how did I forget I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - great adventure game!

^ Yeah, maybe you're right. I was never into all this Superheroes stuff, so I am not sure what genre it belong to.

What about Resident Evil (series) - Shooter. Looks kidna more like a Horror to me ... Sci-Fi Horror ?

And for the lulz, Lego Star Wars (series) - Action Adventure.

Added some more that you guys suggested, here is the update on those added and pending:

ADDED:
Resident Evil Series- YES, I truely believe it is sci-fi/horror simply because of the scientific experimentation well beyond current capabilities. (see definition of sci-fi in the original post. Although it is more known as horror I think most of us forget is is also sci-fi.

I have no mouth, and I must scream- Never played it but there was enough references and no protests so it was added.

Metro 2033- added

Cops 2170:the power of law: Added

Lego Star wars series: lol..yeah added

PENDING:

Freedom Force: seems there is still a current debate on this one. Awaiting more feedback from players.

Assassin's creed: Still debating, I am on the fence on this one currently we have 2 peple saying no and one saying yes. Discussion still on going.

Star Wars: Galaxies: Let me explain why this is pending. I do not wan't to add MMO/MMORPGs that have been shut down and the current Emulator is having legal issues since the disney sale of star wars and lucas arts. Originally LA had a deal wit them and said they could legally make the Emu, but disney (last I heard) changed their mind and advertising illegal private servers is not what this list is about. When I get word they have reached a new agreement I will add it I promise.

Thank you guys for contributing :) Keep em coming.

About Freedom Force.

I'd call it sci-fi. But I wasn't sure others would agree. So if I'm the "dissenting voice", remove the dissent and add Irrational Games' excellent super-hero game series (the one that really broke the super-hero games suck curse) to the sci-fi list!

Added it! Thank you for your input. I have never played it so I would be a bad judge on it. Thats why this thread exists. So that the Sci-Fi community can give input and insight into the great and unending list of sci-fi games out there.

Keep the suggestions coming guys, I know there has to be tons more out there.
