I feel like you left something out of the title OP..
"... Unless you have MEHEM"
Bad fanfiction doesn't count
You know things are bad when "bad fanfiction" is preferred over the "official endings"

It's not the first time fans have deluded themselves with bad fanfiction when the ending to something isn't to their liking

Yeah, just don't spend too much time thinking or brooding about it. It will get worse with time.

One thing I don't particularly like about Extended Cut was that they changed the music during the Catalyst scene. It's a stretched out version of the original that's off sync with the flow of the scene. A good cutscene has music that hits certain notes at times appropriate to the emotion they're trying to evoke. The vanilla had that spot on, but Extended Cut threw it off. To elaborate at which moment I'm describing, I'm referring to the vanilla's moment where the violin started as the Catalyst was telling the Reaper's purpose("The created will always rebel against their creators"). The extended cut version doesn't do that.

To me this is balanced out by the improved "An End Once and for All". Specifically the moment when the camera fades out on Shepard and fades into the war going on when the main piano theme starts.

Deluded enough for a team of them spending months creating and refining a new ending? Deluded enough that even a year after release, still gets over ten thousand downloads from the BSN alone? Heck, can you imagine how many there'd be if it was available on all platforms?
I say it's a better, more desirable delusion than what Bioware rammed down our throats. And a lot of others agree

Did that just last week, actually. Oops. No depression, and I still have my soul.
It's still flawed, frustrating, and vague---but it's also more tolerable and interesting than most of the alternatives I've read (and seen).
