I know some of you guys might think this is kinda stupid but how do you guys end up using your mic?

I've been wondering that since I first got invited to parties on XBL way back in January. I'm not the most person around in fact I hate being around people it freaks me out. For months I've been wanting to use my mic just to say “Hi!” to some of the awesome people I've met here on BSN that are on my friends list but I've never had the courage to do so.

My whole life I've kinda struggled with this you know talking to people, I've never been able to hold a conversation for a long time and playing with some of you guys made me want to actually use my mic... so yeah.

Any tips on using my mic and being more social while gaming would be really helpful.

Cheers,
Choky.

Chocky, just be you. If it genuinely bothers you bit, ease into it. And the way to get over the awkwardness is just to do it. Commit it to it not being perfect and just keep doing it and you'll realize how easy it is.

I'm shy as hell, too. But the only thing you get from being shy is: You get to watch everybody else have fun. So join a party, talk. If you don't like somebody, mute 'em. Don't argue with 'em because you might just want to take your headset/mic off afterwards.

Anyways, I hope you use your mic and have a good time!

No te preocupes Choky.

Actually, it's the same for me with the twist that English is not my native language. When I first got into SPECTRE X parties with "big" names like Invader, Ashen, Biggs, Disciple and all the other "pre-reform" Spectres, I was afraid to say anything, really.

When I ran some speedruns with Arelex people, I had to talk and that kind of broke a barrier. I'm not saying that I'm really talkative on the mic still, but now I can coordinate with people with whom I've either played before or not (like when we ran some Platinum duos with Kocka without having played any games before).

Language competence is not a question for me though, as my English is fairly good (or I'd like to think so that it is). I am/was just afraid to use it.

I remember first time I said "Hi" I felt very shy. You have to test it first with friends you feel comfortable with. Once you made sure it's working, start with the small things. "Hi" or "thank you". Don't think too much about talking a lot. Just try to express small things. Feelings, laughs. When you're used to it, it will feel more natural.
I'm still pretty self conscious about my bad english myself but I try not to think too much about it. It's too much fun to be able to communicate with your teammates.

The first time I used my mic, I had just gotten it and I didn't actually know anyone. I started talking to a few guys that had mics after we'd just finished a bronze run. I thanked them for the games and they sent me friend requests. I played a few more games with them after that. Mostly they'd start by joking with each other, because they knew each other irl and I would add a comment or two - I'm actually a very shy person.

The only reason I started chatting with the people that got me into my mic usage was because we were introduced through a mutual "friend" and so I felt comfortable because that friend was around. This friend that introduced me walked me through my very first (and accidental!) gold match, so that's how I got to know him. I played a few games here and there with him before we got comfortable making conversation.

As for these random BSNers that I've added, I sort of rely on them to talk because if no one else talks then I won't have much to say...

It's really just dependent on your comfort level. If you feel comfortable discussing something or you have a topic, bring it up. Otherwise, start out small...say thanks, ask questions about the game, etc.

Start out simple by saying "fabulous" periodically through the game. When the moment is right, you will know. Once you feel more comfortable, you can move on to advanced phrases like "biower pls" and "working as intended".

But cereally, be you. Nobody expects you to carry the conversation, etc.

I only know your laugh from the legendary vids, HM. And thats the kind of laugh which makes other people do so to no matter what the reason is. Do want to run with you xD

I learned a lot of english thanks to playing me3mp for 9months. Mainly thanks to you guys. Worked out when I was on vacation in London :)

And yes there are people and chairs, some guys I just didnt know what to talk about, some people I get on really fast...like the second ones more:)

all of the bsners Ive played with yet were really great ppl and I was not afraid to hurt the beautiful english language just to lol a lot. Even if they dont speak <3

I dont know how to start a good conversation yet though:(

I'm forced into using my mic. I really don't like talking while i'm playing, in fact I really hate it, but I'm constantly getting countless party invites, I never understood why people want to chat with me on xbox, it's very weird, especially because I don't know any of them in real life. Why do people insist on sending party invites and on chatting while playing? Unless you know the people in real life, it's very weird. I only use my mic because I suppose it would be rude not to accept constant invites from people I've been playing with regularly. I have to put it down regularly because I just don't have the energy to talk sometimes.

Rant over.

You might find yourself more comfortable if you have several people talking. Sometimes, if only two people are on mic, it can feel awkward, if they don't know each other well.

I'd say try it when in a game with people you know well (by Forum/Online Gaming standards) before trying it with PuGs.

Mostly, I would say that if you're uncomfortable, don't force yourself, unless you feel you're missing out on the experience. Then maybe approach it gradually, a little at a time, to allow your comfort to progress naturally.

:)

Next time you're in a party, just say hello. You can be quiet for the most part and only make comments relevant to the game, e.g. "I'll revive you". You pretty much ease your way into it that way.

You're on the internet talking to a bunch of strangers right now. I'm sorry you had to find out this way.

Hmm. I used to not talk at all on live. Eventually I just started saying what's up or GGs. Then I started giving out buts of info about the game. Calling out enemies, letting teammates know I had their back. Now I just talk. Its a gradual process. Eventually it will feel weird not to talk.
