Upset? No, certainly not. More development time tends to be a good thing.

However, after seeing the official DA:I trailer, I am a bit concerned. There wasn't the tiniest glimpse of gameplay in it, and if that is all they had after about two years, then yeah, the game surely needed a delay.

Well do I care? yes and no, this year is an absolute desert for any quality RPG... and why? because the late release of the 2 next gen consoles (as a PC gamer I loathe being tied to console release schedules). So imo no developer is going to release early if they have a large AAA title, without the usual money under the table from Sony and Microsoft (and/or exclusive deals), to easy the burden from lower sales... especially when compared to present gens market saturation. . So my guess, it is all smoke and mirrors as they wait and give the 2 consoles time to expand in the market place... and a little tweaking here and there can't hurt (hopefully better QA and peer reviews in place, I could not stomach another ME3 farce).

Not really.  Project Eternity is supposed to come out next spring I believe.  That should help hold me over.  Also, if a longer dev cycle results in another game as good as DAO, I'll wait five years if they want.

I'm surprised someone is actually sad about it. Personally, I'd push it back even further if I could, for RPGs I like to think that sequels should be at least three full years apart from each other and the longer they're in production the better they'll be when they come out. I say let them take their time, hopefully they learned with their mistakes in DA2.

It is roughly around 3 years already. They said they where working on this game while  they were working on the second one and that was a couple years back so they are right on time then. :)

DA:O took 6 years you can't rush quality games like that (case in point DA2), I'll let them take their time even if I have to wait for 2 more years to get a DA:O quality game again.

DAO took six years because they had to make thedas so to speak. they had to write all the lore the religion the history and everything else. It didn't take six years to do the stuff they are for DAI. also there comes a point when it is bad to take so long.

Case in point - Diablo 3
Just because you take 6 years to make a game doesn't automatically make it epic. Yes, they need enough time to make it great, but there is a limit to how much time to take.

I would like to have DA:I in my hot little hands as soon as possible, but more than that, I want the game to be good. Just about any game can benefit from more time.

OP: The general bulk of the problems with DA2 came from a rushed development cycle. The more that they take their time, the better polished and crafted that DAI will be and since it's apparently been in development since 2011/2012. That's a development cycle of 2 to 3 years.

In short, the developers learned from their mistakes with DA2 and that should make the wait for DAI very worth it.

I am fine waiting. The more time they have to work on it the more they can make big and ambitious like DAO was.

It is possible that the game had to be reimplemented for the new engine. The trailer claims game footage, so they must have simply wanted to show off the engine

Since this is all speculation; here's mine.

I've said it in other threads when this topic has come up; I don't believe the delayed release has much of anything to do with giving Bioware extra time and resources to make DA:I Super Awesome Best Game Ever!

I think it was a management decision. Someone decided to delay the release until the Next Gen consoles were ready. The extra year was needed for the port; not to make DA:I better.

So while we all want DA:I to be a success and a phenomenal game - I would suggest that the delay is no guarantee of either. Think about it; investing an entire extra year worth of salaries/overhead on a game that was touted as being on track for release this coming Fall, right up to the day of the announcement of release?

But it is better PR to say, "We are delaying the game an extra year to make it AWESOME" than "Our bosses think it's a better business decision to have a simultaneous release on all platforms -especially the next generation ones."

Not convinced the developers have learned from all their mistakes in DA2.
Not convinced they have at all.
Yup I feel negative but hope I am wrong.

DAI was held up due to production issues with the frostbite engine and associated systems imo..

The longer the better. When it's finally out, it will be good. And if it isn't, there will be an uprising. What's the worry?

I do admit I wish we'd known earlier it would come out so late. I was all hyped.

Definitely fine waiting -- happy to see the game getting enough time to be thoroughly baked.

More time to make a good game?
How could I be upset about that?
I have a feeling that this'll be worth the wait

Nope. More time on a game usually means higher quality and more polish.

I'm not upset. They can take their sweet time polishing and doing whatever to make it better.

Meanwhile I have a million games that I still need to play before I can get to this one.

True.

I'm kind of frustrated by the announcement but there's nothing that can be done.  If the game is just as bad as DA2 though... after all this time... then yeah, I'm done.

don't really care about the release date. the "forced Human again" evaporated all my impatience and most of my interest in the game.
of course, if more time mean playable races, I cane whait even two more years, but than I would be really impatient.

I have exactly the same theory.

Because many people agree that most of the problems of DA2 were caused by a stupidly short Development time. While loving the first game that had a five year one.

Its easy to toss up unrelated examples where the time didn't matter, if you ignore the directly related examples where it did.

But was the problem of DA2 the short development cycle, or that the Developers decided to make too many changes for the development time they had?

DA2 IMHO wasted precious, limited resources "fixing" things that were not broken. If they had not changed the art design, the combat mechanics, yada, yada, yada, they had plenty of time to make a great story. It was not a lack of resources, but how the resources were used.

In a similar way, with DA:I, we have no evidence that the extra time is going to go for polish, additional quests, characters, or anything else most of us players would like to see. All we know is that they said it was on track for a Fall release right up to the day they said they were delaying it for a year. This announcement came at the same time as the Next Gen consoles were being hyped. And it takes just about a year to port something to a new platform.

If I recall, wasn't the PC version of DA:O put on hold for something like six months so that EA could release the console versions at the same time? The extra time between when the PC version was ready and the game was released did not benefit the polish of the game for any platform. It was purely a business decision - the "suits" decided they could generate more overall sales by a simultaneous release on all platforms, even though the PC version could have been on the market much earlier than it was.

With the introduction of the Next Gen consoles, we have a very similar situation. The game in fact might well be close to completion for current gen and PC. But if the "suits" want a powerhouse, Next Gen title, it makes a sort of corporate sense to hold back the game until Next Gen consoles have an established user base.

I am not saying that all development/polish necessarily will stop - just that the extra time is not the panacea that most people seem to think it is. I really don't think that extra year will contribute all that much to making the game better, just more accessible on more platforms.

Maker no!....take as long as they want. The last thing we need is another rush job like DA2. Delay it another year...fine by me, because a game of the quality of DA:O will be worth waiting for.

Nope. I have plenty of great games to play until then. Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Origins, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Dark Souls 2, Infamous Second Son, and Total War Rome II just to name a few. I've actually been busting up Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne lately. Bioware can take their time and get it right.
