This is way off topic now and going nowhere productive. So let's keep it to tech support issues having to do with the game.

i guess this problem is not solved even @ 1.04 ? I guess i am closer to the problem here. It might be due to DLC. Mayb one, or many dlc causes the huge ram being ate up. Before i installed any dlc(clean with just 1.04) it gave my 2gb windows7 600+mb free. after i loaded up over 10 dlc including awakening, it gave me less than 200mb after loading a save game.

checking the process it ate 1.5gb on private and 1gb on working.

Hey guys. I've been scouring the net for the past 2 weeks for the solution to this very, very irritating problem. And I've found (well, kudos to my brother) a solution that worked for my PC (at least).

First off, I've tried the following solutions that were common in the internet, to no avail:

1. Setting core affinity to only one core via task manager - made loading times faster but made the game lag worse.

2. Buying additional RAM - Didn't do squat, and I had to pay (literally) for it.

3. Saving and exiting the game, then replaying it - This didn't work, the lag/stutter/slowdowns are still there, but what did work (and what worked for most people) was to reboot the PC altogether. This was, of course, very annoying, considering that you have to reboot your PC every 30 mins. or so (depending on when your lag starts) just so you could play DA.

4. Uninstalling/Reinstalling/Removing/Repatching game files - I've toyed with different patches to see if one of them caused this supposed "memory leak" for me, but all patches, including the original "unpatched" version, did not work. I've also installed/uninstalled DLC's such as Witch Hunt and Awakening, and the lag just kept reappearing.

5. Installing/uninstalling drivers/software - I've installed AMD Fusion, Game Booster, CCleaner, and what-have-you's, still, it didn't solve that inevitable lag problem after a few minutes of playing. I've also updated/rolled back video drivers/processor drivers/sound card drivers and still no help. :(

The Solution to my problem:

After i've tried (several times) the above-mentioned "solutions" over and over again, I almost wanted to quit and stop playing DA when all of a sudden, my brother told me that, way back before, a similar problem occurred where some of our games experienced some major lag and what he did was to put back the side-cover of our PC with an installed fan and it fixed our games. I had the side-cover of my PC with the fan removed since I thought (and what many people told me) that it helps with the cooling of your PC. It did, based on the temp readings, though. So I let my brother put back the side-cover of our PC together with the installed fan (I thought it was funny, but that it wouldn't hurt, so heck, why not?). After a few hours of them playing the game, and to my amazement, they told me that they didn't experience any sort of lag just like before when they were playing. I asked them if they rebooted the PC even once during those times and they said no.

So for all of you people out there having that "memory leak/uber lag/slowdown/stutter after a few minutes of playing problem", these may be the possible solutions to your problem:

1. If you removed the side-cover of your pc (like me), try reinstalling it, including the fans.

2. The problem may actually be from the Vid Card overheating or any other component therein, so try buying additional fans, or readjusting fan speed.

3. The power source might have also caused (and solved) my problem, so go ahead and check those out.

I just wanted to share this 'coz I know (verily) the feeling of frustration of not playing this game.

P.S. My specs are as follows (please don't laugh):

AMD X2 Dual Core 5200+ 2.7 Ghz

4GB RAM

AMD chipset

HD 4670 512 mb Vid Card

Duplicate posts are BAD. Therefore, here's a dupe for your dupe:

According to Bioware, everyone uses the wrong terminology.

The memory leak is still there. Nothing was fixed. Restarting the game sure makes it run smoothly again, but at the cost of leaving system memory with junk. In the end, the system is bloated with junk left by Dragon Age and shows up a low memory warning, finally crashing the whole system. It is a real shame on Bioware not to fix this when it has been reported over a year ago!

Been fooling around with a lot of script lately and may have found the, or at least one fix for the memory leak.

changed the following code in core_h on line 772:

Engine_ApplyEffectOnParty(nDurationType,eEffect,fDuration,oCreator,nAbilityId,bExcludeCreator);

to

ApplyEffectOnParty(nDurationType,eEffect,fDuration,oCreator,nAbilityId,bExcludeCreator);

did this and compiled the rules_core (which includes core_h), and i have seen a dramatic increase in performance. someone else out there give this a shot. I'll need to do some more testing to see if this is 100%, but so far so good.

edit:
IGNORE this "fix", after testing it  was not this script change that improved my performance. Worse still, i've managed to undo whatever script change had improved it and can not find it since. Apologies for misleading anyone that tried this. Haven't quite given up yet though. That said, I'm "aware of the problem, and looking into it" Image IPB

Kinda want the post above looked at more closely, because I am having some slow down and crash issues. Seemingly random and if this improves the game, lets get a Dev to see it.

Your not the only one, Jesus Christ Bioware the game has been out for over a year, and now you rushed DA2 to get out without solving the problems for Origins?

Hmm, I'd like to try changing the core_h file like stragonar proposed.

Though, for some reason, I'm not able to see or find any .nss files. I checked the box "show hidden files/folders", but I'm pretty new to windows 7, so I don't really know what's the problem. Can anybody help me with this? It's pretty frustrating, because it must be something very simple ;)

Hi guys, I think I found something to stop the memory leak. Put the game exe in compatibility with windows 2000. I tried it and I played for about 3h without slowdowns for the first time!

Is there any way to make Bioware aware of this problem so they finally get to fixing it? I bought this game twice, first for PS3 and then for PC because of better controls on the latter, and now I can't play it because it starts lagging very fast. I had a similar problem with Mass Effect (1) by the way, but it mostly showed up later, not after ten minutes of playing!

DA2 had neither slowdowns nor crashes;
they heavily improved the technical site in this aspect compared to
DAO. However, we are awaiting a good DAO patch for many months now.
Why did you completely abandon DAO,
BioWare?

Bumping this because it's still an issue in DA:O :(

... except that BioWare doesn't care about DAO anymore and neither do the people here in the tech boards, with a few exceptions, of course.

Is there still no fix for this?

I've had memory problems since patch 1.3. These were just slow downs and crackling audio every few hours. Since patch 1.4 it happens every 5-15 minutes, plus I now get crashes to the desktop every few hours. So now its unplayable and its this problem that stopped me buying DA2 :(

I've been trying for a long time to find a solution and after trying a dozen or so methods I'm out of ideas. I don't think its a problem with my laptop, the game origonally ran perfect prior to the patches. My machine can handle other games with no problems. Mass effect 1 and 2 play perfect too (maxed out).

My specs are:

OS:Vista home premium 32bit sp2
Acer Aspire 8930
Intel quad 2 core processor CPU Q9000 @ 2.00Ghz
Ram: 4 GB
Nvidia geforce 9600M

Okay, I stumbled onto a solution while doing my now ritual daily scan of the internet for fixes. Turning V-sync on and playing in windowed mode seems to have fixed the memory problem. Its abit soon to sing and dance so I'm going to keep playing to see if its really worked.

I have found lowering the AA to 2x lets you play longer without a single memory leak crash but if you bump up to 4x or 8x AA then you crash much sooner than under 2x AA.

System:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE @ 3.4GHZ
4GB DDR3 RAM
MSI Twin Frozr II OC Geforce 560 Ti
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

This happens to me on a laptop with an Intel i7 740 and 6GB of RAM. Even on low setting, the system struggles and the fps is really low. The weird thing is, I can play other more advanced games like ME2 and Supreme Commander seemlessly without restarting afterwards.

Didn't work. It worked for all of 30 minutes but now I can't even play 5 minutes without it lagging like nothing I've ever played before and filling my speaker full of crackling.

I tested it and this problem was introduced at patch 1.03. Now I have the choice of playing the game at patch 1.02 (so a game full of bugs) or not playing at all. I wish I could find a solution to this, I can't play awakening without patch 1.03 so I guess this games going in the bin :(
