The game does need more patching. Sadly, I don't think it's going to happen. I had less trouble with the Neverwinter Nights games (yes, yes, I know 2 was "Obsidian") than I have with DA:O.

Personally, I think the QC nowadays is terrible. Between 1.02a and 1.04 (Stealing notwithstanding) put the game into the sort of state it should have been on release, and by now even better.

Edit: with 1.05 coming, that may fix not much beyond DLC issues, my sentiment remains changed little.

Wait... game lagg this common?
Well at least that explains progressive increase in lagg then.
As well as many places being faster than others - especially when there are fewer enemies.

Ya, (had to ctrl+alt+delete to unfreeze, then noticed that it was taking up insane amounts of memory (1,455,828k and rising), my cpu usage was at 76% - but only playing on medium settings with nothing extra going on. Have a feeling that is the cause of allot of crash's....

BTW - Crisis 2 runs at 1,244,813k BUT thats at full graphics settings (extreme), the number does not increase, and the cpu usage is only at 28%. At least they are working on a patch! 1.0.5 Yay! :) Love this game so much! To be honest, its worth pushing F5 every so often just to get through the story!

Did 1.04 (or 1.03) patch make things worse?

Reason I ask is I started back up with DA:O because of DA 2. I lost my old DA saves (from 1.01B, I believe), so wanted to play through a couple characters to get some import files for DA:A and DA 2. I'm pretty sure when I last played DA before the past couple of weeks, it was with patch 1.01B.

I do not remember Dragon Age running so crap back then. Not even close.

My comp is better now than it was then in all areas (7 vs XP, more ram, better processor, better vid card, etc), and Dragon Age is the only game that was installed then, and is installed now, that runs drastically worse. Other games I have installed on both are only Oblivion, WoW and Starcraft 2, but still, they all run equally well or better now, yet DA is slower (I also have Football Manager 2011 now, as opposed to Football Manager 2009 then - FM is a processor intensive game, and 11 on this comp runs better than 09 did on the old one).

I don't really remember crashes back then, but I am getting quite a few of them now. I don't really remember slowdowns back then (memory leak?), but they are absolutely routine now.

Did a move from XP to 7 cause this, or could it have been going from 1.01b to 1.04? Or possibly using an AMD processor now vs an Intell back then? (both vid cards are/were nVidia).

Relatively new MMO Rift runs perfect right now on max settings, and I'm guessing that game is a bit more demanding than Dragon Age: Origins, but could be wrong. Whether it is or isn't, it looks better.

Or is it possible that it's because I have 1.04 installed, but don't (yet) have Awakenings installed?

But things like Leliana's romance not starting happen now in 1.04. 2 different games where Gentilivi's Research didn't unlock Haven (one abandoned game, one game where I used the console to get through the Urn quest). And other missing/stuck glitches (no gem bag on the 1st thief mark target in Denerim, unable to progress the Favors for Interested Parties due to not triggering the "shoot an arrow in the elf forest" because after I kill the ambush, inspecting the bodies doesn't trigger the next step in that quest).

Just wondering, because the state of my Dragon Age: Origins is pretty bad compared to how I remember it.

I've heard multiple reports. 1.02 had major issues with the game slowing down and running poorly for me, but the problem was improved for me by subsequent patches.  Apparently some other players actually experienced opposite effects.  The later patches also introduced more crashes that did not occur in 1.02 and earlier, the most notable being Mana Clash causing crashes something like 25% of the time it's used.  The answer, in the end, seems to be something like "your mileage may vary."

I've had these memory leak problems since launch day, and since then I've changed my system completely as well. My new PC is much stronger than my old one, so the game runs smoother overall, but the memory leak still occurs with the usual symptoms that go with it (a gradual increase in loading times the longer you play for).

So here's yet another reminder to EA/Bioware: We, your loyal, paying customers, need a patch for this. Please.

Patch 1.05 is currently being beta tested.  It does not specifically address memory leak issues... it is designed to address DLC authorization problems.  I replied to the new post you created... if you're crashing after only five minutes... that is NOT a memory leak.

Alright... massive slowdown that requires a restart, then.

at the moment, the only solution is to cut off Dragon Age every 2-3 hours or the game becomes unplayable. Also if you're running multiple Core Processors limit the game to only one core using the task manager (cuts down on CPU usage which prevents lag due to DA competing with other system processes).

Also if you're crashing every 5 minutes or so, go to your options in game and find the Frame Buffer something option. Uncheck it...it's useless and just causes the game to crash randomly <_>

Here's hoping they fix the memory leak so I can keep feeding this addiction :P Already beaten the story and DLC once through with one character, now I gotta do it again with another character :D and then again with a non-mage, then again with a curse mage...etc. etc. :3

So any news on that beta patch? I have to restart my game after an hour or so, otherwise it's just awfully slow and unresponsive. Oh and my game is randomly crashing, I forgot to disable that frame buffer thingy. I did that 2 years ago as well hehe.

The beta patch is up and pinned to the top of the forum.  It only addresses DLC authentication issues and seems to cause significant slowdowns on its own, which is why it is still in beta.  That said, the fact that it is causing lag may help the devs pinpoint what the problem is.  They weren't able to figure out what was triggering the slowdowns in the private beta group and so went to a larger public beta to get more data to try to track the problem down.  There is a reporting thread, also pinned to the top, for lag issues with 1.04 and 1.05 beta.

I can run the game for 3-4 hours before it goes nuclear. Random crashes when I (or an enemy..) use certain skills (Mana Clash, certain exploding flasks)...I find when there is a lot of fire and spell effects on the screen it leads to the game slowing down very quickly. Towards the end of the game, with all the halo's and spell effects your players have from their skills, it really seems to speed up the memory leak issue. I can only play for 1 - 2 hours once you get to level 20+ before the game crashes itself, after significant loading time increases and general framerate lag.

PATCH please..this game is still better than DA:2, hell even BG:2 is better than DA:2..well, maybe not that far back, it does look pretty dated these days :D

Win7 Enterprise 64bit , AMD x3 450 3.2ghz and a Radeon 5770 w/ 8g of 1333 ddr3 ram running at 7-7-7-24 with an Asus M4A78T-E mobo. All high settings running at 1920x1080, no frame rate buffer option checked.

edit - DA:O ultimate edition through Steam, no problems at all with DLC, running version 1.04

bump!-- So wait.. we had moderators argruing with posters about whether or not this is a mem leak for the system that guy had? Big deal.. lets fix the mem leak and eliminate that problem that that can can fix his stuff. I am running non-OC'ed six core proc with 8 gig of ram on a rampage MB on win7 64 bit with a 6870. I still a slow down when fighting the last one was during the dragon fight in blackmarsh. It was only one.. screen froze and went blank, sound stopped and then after about 10 seconds.. it all came back- with me one step behind. It froze and crashed to desktop earlier. EVENT viewer log:
