I think the protaginist for Mass Effect 4 should be Shepard, but not the Shepard you're thinking of. It should be 'Shepard junior', now you may already be thinking this isn't going to work, but please bear with me. In keeping with your choices having a 'Mass Effect' this child should have been made from Shepard and his LI from the previous game which opens up some interesting possibilties say if they romanced Tali or another non-human character. First and foremost, what would they look like? Also how would they be treated by different alien races?
Another advantage of using Shepard's child as the protaginist is it allows people to keep a personal connection to the first games, whilst allowing it to be significantly different and it works with everyone's playthroughs. Even in the unlikely scenario Shepard didn't romance anyone in ME3 then it would allow the player to pick someone/a race their Shepard had a child with to make their new character. The only difficult one to handle would be Shepard dying and not romancing any character but this could be solved somehow e.g. Similar to the restoration of Shepard in the second game but instead his DNA is used to create a new child. If Shepard did survive ME3 then he could act as a mentor at points during the game otherwise I'm sure Garrus or someone would suite the role equally as well.
Like all sequel suggestions of ME3 the problem comes with handling the ending if destory wan't picked because they would all result in such a different universe. As many have suggested one way to deal with this would be to just force destroy on everyone, which most people picked anyway and I would prefer this if it would compromise the quality of the game accounting for all different endings.
The best part though I think of this idea is the story oppurtunities it opens up. It begs the question, how would a child of the greatest man/woman in the universe handle the expectation? There is no longer a galactic war going on so this game would be much more of a personal struggle. I assume this would make it a lot more open world which would again, add a new spin to the game and take it back to it's roots of ME1. I personally preferred ME2 but I wouldn't mind that.
But a must for this game is at the beginning they must have a cutscene where I finally bloody build Tali her house on Rannoch, quite frankly if they include that I'll buy the game even if the rest is the alpha version of frogger.
Anyway, that's just my idea. It's quite undeveloped at the moment but I thought I'd get it down before I forgot, so what do you think?
It'd be interesting to know your ideas and what improvements you'd make on this or if you hate it entirely.
