Funny, I felt similarly about the mage origin.  I have trouble getting through it.  Perhaps it's because it is depressing to think that the best friends you have in the tower are Jowan and Cullen.  :P

I immediately turned Jowan in to Irving both times I ran Mage. I'm a bad friend.

Seducing Cullen soooo should have been an option though.

Best: Dwarf Noble

Worst: Dalish elf (like no closure at the end of the game) and I'm biased against elves mostly after playing WoW haha.

I liked both of the nobles. Human noble builds up and ends very well, adding alot of emotional background and motivation to your character. Dwarf noble is also quite good, I liked how Bhelen plays out with everyone; and I -knew- he was going to be a throne candidate.

I am yet to play Dwarf Commoner.

Mage was decent, I liked the last-moment coercion choice in fade and seeing Jowan's betrayal.. and double-acting.

Elves were probably my least favorite. I don't even remember Dalish elf well, it didn't really have a distinguishing feature I think. I also expected a great reflection of Dalish culture, my expectation wasn't satisfied. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't on par with the others I played.

City elf... it's not bad, but I found the recruitment part to be a bit out of it. I mean... yeah, I'm an elf with spine who can kill stuff... but is that how grey wardens recruit? Plus, it is hinted in the game (hints?) that right of conscription is usually spared if it will end up in diplomatic troubles. It also didn't fit that either. I know it can be justified, I just didn't find it "natural" to fit in.

My City elf went and killed an entire manor of people, including a Bann's son, then took all the responsibility on herself so that Soris wouldn't get in trouble.  Duncan recruited her for her spunk and to save her from being executed on the spot.  At least for my story, it fit very well.  Plus, he mentions that he had wanted to recruit your mother previously, so he already had his eye on you for recruitment.  Saving her from execution was just the cherry on top of the rest, so to speak.

Valendrian will tell you, if you say you're looking forward to being a Grey Warden, that Duncan came there for you.  It's hinted that he had been monitoring you over the years, since he earlier had wanted to recruit your mother.  It's just Duncan's good fortune that the whole wedding thing didn't turn out!  Plus, fighting your way out of a palace compound with a borrowed sword and in your wedding dress makes for one impressive show.

Duncan was also a cutpurse and ruffian himself before being recruited (possibly conscripted?), so he obviously has a soft spot for city toughs.  Fits very well IMO.

Also, the Grey Wardens are known for using their Right of Conscription to save condemned people quite frequently. Duncan did it for Daveth, and in the books, that's how Duncan was recruited as well.

The only time Duncan really hesitates using the Right of Conscription is during the Human Noble origin, I think. He states plainly to Bryce Cousland that his youngest child would make an excellent GW, but backs off quite quickly when Bryce objects. Of course, Duncan being Duncan, he uses the final situation at the castle to get what he wanted originally, anyway, and will conscript you if you insist on going against your father's wishes.

@all repliers: Thanks for all the info! City elf rises in my eyes now. I must have either skipped some of that (I did play it at a very late hour) or not seen it at all (like not saying to be looking forward to being a warden).
I'll take city elf origin from dalish elf's neighborhood to mage's then :P
Nobles are still my favorites:)

I dont think there really is a best or a worst.

You will relate more strongly to one origin than the other depending on your own background and upbringing. Being able to relate it what makes your choice for you. I personally have not tried all the origins, but I found worth and merit in each of the ones I completed.

That said ...

I choose Dalish as best (very odd because I seldom play an Elf). I played the character as fiercely loyal to family and very suspicious to outsiders. Great fun!

I choose Mage as worst only because I am not majiks kinda roleplayer.

Honorable mention to the "casteless ones" especially as it relates upon their return "home". I am still playing my way through the Dead Trenches.

Best: Mage, but honestly I like both nobles and the City Elf almost as much.

Worst: Dwarf Commoner. It just does nothing for me.

Thats because you have never been on the bottom rung of a caste based system with social restrictions.  Then again neither have I, but the idea of escaping that which should not be escaped makes the concept that much more desireable.

Best: Mage. Great origin story and what it leads to later is great. This origin leads to some of the most interaction next to only Human Noble. Seeing Jowen again, the First Enchanter, the reactions from others to you being a big scary mage is just wonderful. I want to say Human Noble because of the interaction of your character with the others later on when they find out that the Warden is of the noble bloodline and when you get revenge, but with Mage you get to go into the fade and interact with the demon in Redcliffe and so much more.

Worst: Dwarf Commoner. This origin just has nothing to it. You get pushed around and don't get any of the fun of the Dwarf Noble with the "Noble Hunters" or any of the intrigue. It's just there and then over. I played the origin for the achievement and then quit it. I don't even want to see how Jarvia reacts to seeing you again later in the story.

Dwarf noble was probably the hardest one and the most interesting.

Dalish is a close second...

are we talking the Origin chapters? or setting up for the whole game? i'll assume we just mean the actual Origin chapters...
Best: Mage by far... i love this origin, if i'm in the mood to create random new characters, i always choose mage, since their Origin chapter is by far the most entertaining for me. it also seems to me to me the longest of the origins as well... dwarf noble is a decent length too.
Honourable mentions to Human Noble and City Elf Female...

Worst: hard to call any of these origins the worst... but i'd have to vote for Dwarf Commoner...it was perhaps the most predictable of all the origins... and thats right from the opening conversations... at least the Human Noble and Dwarf Noble had SOME ambiguity as to how the chapter would play out.

on the Dalish origin. Its certainly longer than the Human Noble, but i'll admit less happens in it... considering a female dalish is most likely supposed to be in love with Tamlen, his swift "death" is less meaningful since it happens in perhaps the first 10 minutes of the chapter. having said that tho.. i think much like the City Elf, i find the community-minded Clan to be very easy to fall in love with, they very clearly care about you, and Tamlen, and the grief they show for his death and your departure is more involving than just about anything in any other origin. City Elf can get just as heavy if your Warden is female, and the final scenes of Human Noble where Eleanor and Bryce are being left behind... her voice acting is flawless... i wanted to drag her out by the hair if i had to, to save my mother...

I liked the Human Noble the best and the dalish elf one was the worst for me. It wasn't horrible but I couldn't really connect to the people in it like I could in the others.

The Human Noble origin though felt like it was connected to the main plot of the story more than the others in my opinion as that helped get you to understand how the whole political situation got set up after the battle at Ostagar happens.  The others didn't really feel like they were connected to the overall plot but did help you understand how the situation in that respective area gets started.

Best - dalish

worst - mage.. Bad forced decisions fails. I'd like to help jowan escape, instead of just betraying.

True, but that doesn't change the fact it feels very flat.

The mage origin does a good job of setting up the politics in the Tower (at least if you chat people up). And it sets up the nature, dangers and lure of magic well. As far as Jowan goes, I turned him in both times too. He compounds bad decisions with expecting you to sacrifice your life for his 'friendship,' (which he plans on abandoning anyway). It's a very selfish attitude and my PCs went to Irving immediately because they didn't see what other logical choice they had. Didn't mean they didn't sympathize with the desire for freedom from the 'leash' of the phylactery though.

Re: City Elf
I really didnt give this one the chance it should have.  I made an extremely feeble bucktoothed male elf who did not want to get "forcibly" married and did not want to be part of the raid ... and well that is as far as I got
Image IPB
I intend to try it again with a more serious character, but as I said before - I am not much for playing elfinfolk.

Re: Dwarf Noble

I LIKE IT ... I just wish my personality would continue shining through even without Gorim.  Thats priceless ... reminds me of Prince Tarn in that lemon of a movie known as Red Sonja.

Speaking of which ... is there another Red Sonja movie in the making?

I really, really did not like the human noble origin. In a game like this that seeks to turn a number of cliches on their heads, it just seemed so cliche. How many times have I gone to bed at the beginning of an RPG and awakened to my village being attacked? Too many.

Dwarf Noble was the best for sure.

Best- City Elf (Going to try the Female Perspective soon)(Loved Killing the Arl's Son, also does killing Vaughan tie later into the story preventing me from getting his key in denerim which yields 40 Golds?)

Worst - Mage (Did it 3 times, could not stand to even play, was so freaking boring and jowan really grinds my gears. Never again will i start another mage)
