A quick question on skill points for character building:

For the OC, how many ranks should a PC plan on devoting to diplomacy in order to successfully pass most or all conversation DCs?  Or maybe I should ask, what is the total diplomacy skill (ranks +CHA modifier +any item boosts) that a character should aim for?

Also, if I carry the character over to MotB, should I plan on raising the skill further?

I don't think this should be a high priority. I used a half-orc barbarian (Groshnak the Youngest) with a CHA of 8 and no skill points into diplomacy and was able to fake my way through all the dippy* checks using a concoction of hat, cloak, amulet and bardic inspiration. There are no big "hidden chapters" to unlock, either, just some different conversation and a few minor bonus XP. In MOTB there's no bard, but wizards can still cast spells and there are better hats.

* bonus points for anyone who recognizes that abbreviation.

There were diplodocus checks in the game? Obviously by spot skill was *extremely* poor.

Skill bonuses via equipment will stack (unlike ability bonuses), so as long as you've got at least one point in a skill (if it's a skill that requires training, which I don't think diplomacy is), bonuses from multiple equipment sources can boost you in it significantly.

Besides - who needs diplomacy when you walk around with a weapon in your hand all the time?
