 Hey gang.
I used to play NWN yeeeeaaaaaaars ago and I've just picked it up while travelling to sate my nerd-needs!

I'm trying to make a roleplaying build for a Pale Master + Ranger. I understand they aren't an ideal combination (to say the least?), but it's mainly for RP offline (for now at least). I'm basically looking for any ideas how best to make the build work, what combinations to use, how to balance it etc, while maintaining the undead bow-user theme.
As it stands I'm working around Wiz, Pale Master, Eldritch Knight, Ranger. All-rounder with a strong defense is the main idea. It doesn't need to be Ranger even, it just seems to be the most efficient at getting bow-feats early.

My currently ignorant idea is that of a high-defense spell caster that can use bows to reinforce spells, relying on DEX for defense and bow dmg... I don't know enough about stealth to understand working it in efficiently :/
Like I said, balance can be shifted any which way, I'm just aiming for necromantically-fuelley bowmaster.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post and thanks in advance.

To be clear: Do you want these specific classes for RP, or do you just think they fit the concept well mechanically (i.e. PM for defence)?

Let's start by saying that it's not a great combination. I don't know what level you intend to reach, but the most effective way to do it - considering that it's not an effective mix at all - would likely imply maxing EK, enough wizard to get all the spells, a couple of ranger levels, and a single PM level. In epic you could probably increase ranger, or maybe PM a bit. Alternatively, change wizard/EK for bard. This is probably not what you had in mind, but full PM would severely affect both your spellcasting and archery prowess.

Now, if you want a decent wizard archer, you can do something like this. It's not a PM, but there's a reason for that.

I wanted PM specifically for RP but since it just won't work, I may try the wiz archer... Would bard/pm/ranger mix at all? I think I'm confusing the PM function then, are they solely to give defense/durability to casters?

If you were going to make an evil spellcasting archer (level 9 spells, arcane or divine), what would you pick?

PM doesn't have many functions. A single level gives you +2 AC and opens some skills, but after that, it's rarely worth taking (you can make a viable character with it, but it's never the best option).

With a few more levels you get some more AC and a couple of immunities, but those are buggy, and there are other ways to get them. The best way to give defence to casters is increasing their caster level. A bit more AC pales in comparison to defensive spells.

I don't know which class I'd use for a casting archer. Cleric or druid could work, but I'd focus on casting, specially with the latter. You can try a PM, especially if it's for the OC; just don't expect anything spectacular, neither regarding archery nor spellcasting.

You can try asking on the forum in my sig (3rd link), but you'll probably get similar answers.

Okie dokes thanks again.

Have you got any suggestions as to where I'd start with a katana + bow class? I'm guessing a need for focusing on melee or ranged is the problem there; is there any place for having a balance of the two?

Without spellcasting, I assume? The best you can do is something like this, but it only works with a small race and certain weapons (short sword and handaxe). If you really want a katana, I guess you could try some sort of STR-based Arcane Archer (since katanas are not finesseable), but it's not going to be the best archer in the world.
