MASS EFFECT: FOUNDATION #4

Far away from Earth, on Gagarin Station—or “Brain Camp,” as its students call it—a young Kaidan Alenko undergoes his biotic training. During an exceptionally grueling lesson, Kaidan steps in to defend the lovely Rahna from the brutal Commander Vyrnnu—but his rash actions have tragic consequences!
  • Written by Mac Walters, lead writer of Mass Effect 2 and 3!
  • A canonical entry in the Mass Effect series!
  • Ties in to the Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC pack!
Pre-Order Link

Kaidan is my favorite character. I should be jumping for joy, but I'm not. I'm actually really worried. It's a canon recount of Kaidan's experiences a BAaT, and it hints that there is some love-dovey crap with Rahna in it. It wouldn't be a big deal, except my Kaidan is gay. It's a future where one doesn't have to hide in the closet, and no one puts pressure on you to be straight. Rahna was just a classmate to him. That's my canon, and my concern is that this comic doesn't take the gay Kaidan fans into consideration. I really hope Rahna is just a lovely girl and that I don't have to read about Kaidan crushing on her.

Except Kaidan being into Rahna is already canon. Kaidan being bi/gay is the retcon here.

It was always canon that he had a crush on Rahna! He mentions it in the first game when you have conversation with him about BaAT.
I'm just now angry at Bioware for taking their sweet time to even remember Kaidan exists. (They have been really good about kicking around the VS fans.)

Given that Kaidan has always been romanceable by femShep I don't see how anyone could possibly make a case for him bring gay.

He never mentions Rahna in my game. When he talks about killing Vyrnnus, he said he was defending a girl that was reaching for a glass of water. That's it.

This does not change anything. It still happened in his backstory. You, the player, do not have that kind of control over the character's personalities or backstories. Simply chosing a dialog choice that prevents them mentioning it doesn't mean it never happened.

Not forgetting he shows interest in asari anyway.

"Except my Kaidan is gay".
I'm sure as hell that Kaidan is bisexual.

This.

Sorry OP, but the retcon isn't in the Foundation comic.

You don't own Kaidan. There is no "your" Kaidan.

So you just don't care becuase in your strange enigma of a mind, kaidan was never attracted to girls...except all those times he was.

Kaidan was attracted to both sexes, and he used to be in love with a woman. Now he's in love with your maleshep. Is that really so hard to accept for your own persoanl game op?

It's bad enough fans claim Shepard is "theirs" but now they think NPCs are "theirs" too?!

Wow....

Wow....

I think they could claim Shep as theirs, I mean, it's a rpg, we create the guy and we make the choices.
Therefore, he belongs to the player in the sense of "This is my save, this is the character I made and this is the stuff I've done with him/her".

Of course, saying you own a NPC is incorrect ... Unless you create it.

How exactly is it a retcon, anyway? When did Kaidan ever state that he was not attracted to men? Just because male Shepard couldn't romance him yet doesn't mean he wasn't interested. Following that logic, they retconned Tali and Garrus, too. They were asexual in ME1, since neither of them were romance options by either gender.

Second, if you listen to http://www.gdcvault....6/Sex-in-Video' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow external'>this speech, David Gaider talks about BioWare's approach to LGBT characters. He discusses the fan reaction to everyone in Dragon Age II being bi by saying their sexualities are undefined and are different in each player's games. I simply applied that philosphy to my Mass Effect experience. In my universe, my Kaidan is gay.

Except in all universes Kaidan shows either attraction to asari or Rahna.

That's not really applicable seeing as how david gaider doesn't work on the mass effect series.

Maybe it's a good story, and just leave sexuality at the door, hm?

It's not a retcon. Kaidan was meant to be bisexual in Mass Effect 1, as stated by devs. But for some reason it didn't get in.

Besides, Kaidan didn't even outright flirt with FemShep. So his total lack of flirtation with BroShep was probably because Kaidan is respectful and believed BroShepard to be straight.

And when he finally does confess his feeling in ME3, he probably figures that they're chances of dying are pretty damn high and so why keep quiet.

I hope Mac Walters did exactly that. Tell a good story and leave Kaidan's sexuality ambiguous so as not to disrupt anybody's canon.

He's not. The NPC's aren't created or controlled by the players, their actions can be somewhat influenced like real peoples can (with the help of Shepards super charisma) but they've always been individuals.

Kaidan is bi. There is no "my" Kaidan.

That doesn't change the fact that kaidan did in fact have someone he was attracted to from the camp, and that their relationship didn't work out in the end.

Kaidan's sexuality has never been ambigious. He's always had an interest in the opposite sex.
