Human, decoy is only at all useful against some factions. If Biower, when they nerfed all pets and decoys had given the decoy some reasonable damage attack it wouldn't have totally crapped in the Salarian.

Both.
As you said, HE is the king of techs explosions but is squishier than the SE because of energy drain.
I consider the SE more like a soldier than an engineer. Give him a lancer with disruptor ammo, use a decoy-less build, weapons damage for the passives, health & shield for the fitness.
Congratulation, you have now a salarian soldier. He's tougher than what he looks.

I'm a big user of the Incinerate then Overload combo. I get more use out of the HE than the SE, but most of that probably depends on play style.

Not a fan of either of them, but I think the Human is superior. Overload is just such a great power.

Alternate overload and incinerate for constant combos.

Combat drone can actually be made potentially useful. Decoy sucks.

Chain overload stuns everything to allow you to play more aggressively.

I just don't see the appeal in decoy still...

Energy drain doesn;t detonate as well as Overload does. The tanking aspect is nice, but only relevant if the Salarian gets the 40% DR and Cyclonic Mod. Otherwise, his shields gets destroyed just as fast most of the time.

Decoy Image IPB, Energy Drain Image IPB, cute black eyes Image IPB - what's not to love about the salarian engi?

The human is good too, for sure. It's a good all-rounder and is a really good entry-point into the world of MP. Combat drone kind of seems...impotent though. Overload and incinerate are too main-stream.

HE is in my top 5 - skip drone, bring a scorpion, troll all the enemies and occasionally your teammates.

Combat drone is still a good power in my opinion. Who needs fitness when you can stunluck the enemy with Overload?

Because the drone can take out the most important stunlocker the enemy has: Geth Prime.

What? You're comparing the best stunlocker in the game to a liver delicacy? That's crazy talk!

The drone works really good with cerberus and geth...not so good with the monster factions tho...but I still say it's more useful than decoy. ED is a nice power but it feels bugged in times you need it most..
I prefer the human

I like the human engineer better.. it's easier to chain tech combos with him/her.

Love'em both.
Venom on the Salarian, Arc Pistol on the Human - destroy all the things.

In my opinion, the original characters, without any DLCs are seriously powerful, more so than the new ones. The new ones may have a small edge in certain things here and there, but as a whole "any situation" gameplay, the originals come in.

The Salarian and Human engineers are one of the original characters. In terms of "hitting the enemy hard", no one does it better than the Humans. They strip shields and barriers really quickly and easily with overload, then hit armour hard with incinerate. You can create some seriously nice and big fire explosions (AOF incinerate + one chain overload).

The drone was so much better, it is very good, especially when it explodes and triggers fire/tech bursts. I remember it used to cause bosses (brutes and banshees) to get off you'r back for a moment, not anymore.

The Decoy was also much better before they nerfed it. Watching two Banshees try to grab a decoy, while you prime them with incinerate and the decoy explodes causing tons of damage and serious fun.

Personally, id go with the Human, the drone tracks enemies till it is destroyed, overload hits enemies hard. Energy drain is very good to restore you'r shields, that is when it actually works (so many times used energy drain on shielded/barriered enemies with zero effect).

Before my power brick bit the dust, I was using the SE quite extensively with the Venom. I was having a fun time with him. That weapon just seemed to fit him. Never been too fond of the vanilla engys.

Human. You can always self detonate regardless of enemy defenses and I find combat drone to be more useful than decoy. Also, the human dodge is better in my opinion.
