Please, Bioware... make it happen again. Charismatic companions are a must!

I still remember these:

The Silent Lord take thee!

I thought the DA2 companions were a more eclectic and personable bunch, to be honest.

I'm not worried at all in that regard. David, Luke, and Shmaryl have a nose for good companions.

"Memorable" and "charismatic" are two wildly different attributes.

"Feel the chill touch of the grave!"

He really was the most powerful henchman in the game.

Most of the major characters in DA2 seemed to either have a big defining idealistic crusade of some kind ("Free the mages!" "Blood magic to save the elves!") or else to exist principally for purposes of being chummy and/or funny (Varric, Isabela, Bethany). Everybody felt sort of like a one-trick pony. Even though I liked Varric at least, I felt like I had learned everything worth knowing about all of them within five minutes. I'd like some characters with some more depth and variance please.

I think that's more the lack of depth that was true for everything in DA2. The depth may be there (I'm almost certain it is, in fact), but there clearly wasn't time to expose any of it to the player.

Hopefully the situation will be improved in DA3, especially with this extension.

DA2 had some of the best companions in any bioware game or any game period. The game had serious weaknesses but the companions and their interrelationships were not one of them.

Both of the DA games had memorable characters, so I don't think they'll be removing that for DA:I.

Yes, Mhairi. I recall her being a massive troll on BioWare's part.

As long as we won't have companions like Anders/Fenris who ramble on and on about the same thing 90% of the time, I'll be happy.

Agreed.  Companions IMO are the most interesting when they challenge the PC (and by extension, the player).  Opinionated, polarizing, and occasionally troublesome characters like Anders, Miranda Lawson, and Jaheira are usually my favorites.  DA2's crew had a lot of variety and depth to them if you were willing to stick with it despite the game's problems, and I loved them even if I did want to punch each of them at least once (and some way more than once).

ME crew still wins by a landslide. I did like Alistair, Morrigan and Fenris a lot though. My main complaint with DA2's companions was the lack of a seriously likeable female companion.

I agree with this. I actually have a hard time remembering the companions from Dragon Age Awakening compared to the ones from DAO and DA2. I am sure the companions in DAI won't disappoint.

The companions in DA2 were terrific. They were the best part of the game, really.

Bethany was beautiful, Carver was Jealous, Merrill was spastic.....and there was the promiscuous one, the vengeful , one, one full of hatred, the exile, and the colorful one.
DA2 left a lot to be desired in its character development .
I expect better in DAI, but I still think it will be inferior to DAO.

Challenging the PC wasn't the problem.  I love Jaheira and Viconia (who I'd consider even more challenging to the player than just about anybody in DA2). Mordin can also challenge the PC and I'd consider him a character with a lot more depth and thought than Miranda (how does she challenge the PC anyway?) or Anders.  The issue is that challenging the PC on 1 particular issue made up 90% of the personality of several DA2 characters with some slight bit left over for comic relief in the case of Merrill.  Seriously, what else did Fenris have going for him except "slavery is bad and lock up the mages!"  What did Anders have except "I'm losing control and free the mages!"

Jaheira was challenging but she had tons of conflicts going on at the same time: getting over Khalid, trying to come to terms with what the Bhaalspawn was, reconciling her own idea of being a Harper with what elements of the Harpers wanted.  She wasn't a one-trick pony.  Niether was Viconia.  There are no nuanced ways to approach Fenris or Anders.  It's either take it or leave it.  They didn't challenge my thinking.  They felt like sermons masqurading as characters.  Mordin challenged my thinking.  Kreia challenged my thinking.  Almost all the Planescape Torment characteres challenged my thinking.  And they all did it with tons more depth and nuance.  Heck, even Wrex did a better job of challenging my thinking by breaking down tons of preconceptions.

*Edit*  Also, the issue isn't that the DA2 characters weren't the best part of the game.  They were.  The issue was they were weaker in terms of depth, personality, story, and nuance than any Bioware crew outside of ME1.

That sucks. I loved all three women in DA2, but you can't help what you end up liking and not liking. I happened to not particularly like the women in DA:O; dunno why. Although Asunder made me like Leliana a little more. (She sounded cool lol)

Same here. In DA:O, the only female character I liked was Morrigan, and even then, my feelings toward her were barely lukewarm. In DAO, I disliked Wynne and Leliana intensely, although I did like Leliana *slightly* better in Leliana's Song. In DA2, I loved all three of the OC women. In DA2, I liked everybody (except Tallis, although not to the same degree). That's the first time I've ever liked every character in a game's OC.

So yeah, I don't buy the assertion that DAO had the superior cast.

This. There was not one that I thought "This dude is awesome."

The consolation prize goes to Varric , who is the only one that was remotely interesting or memorable.

The rest just came across as  brain damaged bang puppets or shoddy rip offs of other games. Ugh.

All the characters in all the games are cliche. This is not debatable. However, there is good execution of the cliche and poor execution of the cliche.

DA2 companions are for the bin, we want real companions.
