In DA2 all of the companions were insane.

So? Everyone here is practically insane, too.

If there is anything I have NEVER doubted about Bioware it is their ability to create memorable companions.

Imo, DA 2 companions are boring, shallow, stereotype, extreme, and overall pretty one dimensional. I barely felt any connection between them and my Hawke, (Hawke himself / herself is also dead boring, and terribly voiced) plus their decisions and banters are, for the most parts, awful.
I missed good characters that we have in the old games (NWN, KOTOR...). Please, give us more of those realistic, 3 dimensional, complex characters.

ME crew still wins by a landslide. I did like Alistair, Morrigan and Fenris a lot though. My main complaint with DA2's companions was the lack of a seriously likeable female companion.

For me, Aveline and Isabella (especially when they were together) were a couple of the funniest and most likeable characters I've ever seen in a video game.

I think a few of the DA:O companions perhaps left a stronger lasting impression, but on the whole I'd say the DA2 companions were done better.

I liked Neverwinter Nights, but its single player campaign - the plot and the characters - was the most threadbare and uninteresting one I've seen BioWare make.

heh forgot Niverwinter had a single player campaign

The problem i have honestly with this thread, is that I remember all the characters one way or another.

The only ones I don't remember are the DA:O DLC ones (expect Shale)

DA2 companions seem a lot more well rounded if you factor in party banters (not so much Anders) the player has very limited interaction with them and it's always about their defining trait.

Charismatic doesn't mean memorable. Sten wasn't charismatic but he was sure memorable.

I think Sten was extremely charismatic once you got to actually do a whole conversation with him.

I liked their catfights, but neither of them were very likeable. Isabella's sex drive was overdone and ridiculous whereas Aveline was quite dull and stubborn. They were well written and memorable, but not likeable. Merril tops both of them though, she was horrible imo.

Yep.

The only decent ones imo were Isabella, Aveline and Varric. Sebastien was probably the least memorable chaqracter in it (actually forgot to download him at first when I replayed it recently!). The rest I was happy to never hear from again!

A few dialogues I would have liked-

"So, Merryl, why don't you tell me about this mirror a few dozen more times, ignore all of my advice, and do whatever you want"

"Anders...what do you think about Templars?"

"Fenris, you look like you need to moan like a 9 year old girl a bit more...I'm here for you buddy!"

The only companion I liked in DA 2 was Aveline. It's not unreasonable for a woman to eschew more feminine traits in a position traditionally held (not meant) for a male - and yet when it came to her romance, I felt that she was extremely vulnerable. Also a trait I find very believable in someone who's put her job above her "life" - and who had been in a long term relationship prior (marriage) and could have fallen "out of practice" dating.

The rest... meh.

I liked the DA:O characters - but I didn't feel like they were much more than Archetypes. Sten I found the most complex and loved that he was very hard to get to open up (the usual ass kissing didn't make him like you).

The rest were "fun" so long as I turn off any critique of their believability as fully fleshed out "beings". Which is totally fine - I love Archetype characters - I just don't consider them excellent examples of real people.

Fair enough if you didn't like them. I think the point about Isabela was that, like Oghren, she exaggerated her sex life in order to cover up her insecurities. She said near of the game that she's lost count of the number of times she's been rejected by men for looking like a 'pirate hag'. And I'd say Aveline's humour is very deadpan, which I find hilarious, but maybe not everyone agrees.

Best line in the game:

Aveline (to Isabela): I’ve had enough of your loose lips. Like many, I’m sure.

The only one I found pretty lacking for me was Sebastien. The others were all the way they were for good reasons as you find out by their past. Also some of them are not quit what they seem. They progressed and changed as the story went on in many cases. The full out dislike to pretty near friendship of Aveline and Isabella was very skillfully done. Though I can't stand Anders, his character was pretty well done.

I see. Well it's just the matter of opinion, I think. NWN was my personal favorite ever since its released so yeah. The original plot was quite linear and predictable, I agree. Though I found the characters are quite interesting. Grimgnaw, for instance, was badass, creepy, and awesome as hell. Or Linu, whose stories always crack me up. Hell, I even had more fun flirting with Sharwyn than I did in any DA 2's romances. And of course, Aribeth. Her story is interesting (maybe because I always like the fallen angel type of story). Also if you have HoU expansion pack, romancing her was fun, and it had an interesting ending (and imo, quite beautiful, in a fantasy / D&D way). *SPOILER ALERT* Also, romancing her actually had some use, since you will be able to persuave her in the end. Unlike that emo freak Anders whom you can't stop no matter what.

Just my opinion though, but DA 2 characters are the dullest and most .... meh... BioWare ever made. I'd rather spending another 50+ hours with NWN, or KOTOR, or BG and reading / listening to their dialogues than spending another 15 mins with DA 2.

It's a term of endearment.

Like when you have two favorite ice cream flavors; they're both so good you daren't pick just one!

And now I don't have to. :-)

I don't care about gigglesqueeing. Both the characters in DAO and DA2 had something I could identify with in some form or another. I hope Bioware manages to do the same with ENTIRELY NEW companions in DAI.

DA2 had some of the best companions in any bioware game or any game period. The game had serious weaknesses but the companions and their interrelationships were not one of them.

Indeed this. The least memorable companion characters in DA2 were the cameos from DAO ones. Image IPB
