Got top say, once you sit through (or preferably skip) the horrible intro, this commentary piece is actually spot on and the perfect response to this latest piece of pathetic PR. Nicely linked, thanks.

It's just saying they have taken design decisions with the intention to cater for both new and returning players. It's not marketing exactly, it was just an off hand comment on twitter after being asked a question.

I tried explaining that earlier in the thread, but it seems to have mattered little. Still, if I quote your post, maybe someone will read it this time :P

A nothing article with a canned statement. What would you expect them to say "If you've bought our stuff before, you'll hate it"?

Seriously, what is Bio supposed to do? Not make the game friendly to newcomers when something between a half and a third of players will be newcomers? Not make the game friendly to longtime fans?

Indeed.

Heck, this sums up ME3 quite well also.

I couldn't agree more. if I had to sum up what I hated the most about ME3 in 1 point it would boil down to the fact that I did not have fun playing it.

As for Bioware saying the next Me game would appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike. I see nothing wrong with this statement since the original trilogy is over and Bioware will be picking up thier new story with a new main character, new squadmates, a new storyline and hopefully a new timeline ( I'm still holding out hope for a sequel set 100's to 1000's of years in the future ), logic dictates that this new ME game would be an ideal time for new gamers to pick up the franchise.

Marketing ME3 as the best place to jump on the franchise however was a stupid move, you don't begin reading a book by starting on the final chapters and you don't begin watching a film from the final 20 minutes, you have to begin at the beginning or you are going to get left out on important plot details.

Well, what's wrong with the statement is the very fact that they used it (or a very similar one) in their description of ME3.  The statement no longer holds any meaning, because they will say it about anything.

It's not a PR machine starting up. It was Roy being kind enough to answer a question from someone about the possibility of a new Genesis comic. He didn't even throw in the hash tag thingies.

*rollseyes at responses in thread* How dare they try to market their product to new potential customers? Who do they think they are trying to expand and strengthen potential customer base like every other damn developer on the planet does? Who do they think they are?

If they use an existing secondary character from the trilogy - the game should be called ME 3.XXXX of which I'm sure as hell won't be playing. Image IPB

I'm hoping the new game will have a new playable character, new secondary characters, and a lot of new stuff (weapons, ships, armour, planets, etc.) Image IPB

I agree with Blade. I want the PC and the squad to be new, including a new ship. Now with that said I don't mind if someone like Grunt or Liara are still potential squadmates since they are both very young by their species standards and this new game could take place several decades or even centuries after ME 3. I am personaly hoping for decades so the galaxy can rebuild after the reaper war but the effects of the war are still visible.

I can see why it would appeal to newcomers as it will be the start of a whole new story arc so new players wouldn't have to worry about back story too much and, like in the original Mass Effect, important events and universe breakdown is quickly explained by crew members or people around you without making it feel like a lecture.

So are they going to try to win back former fans as well? Or do we get lumped into the "existing fans" category?

Appealing to both is where they went wrong; it lead to a lot of inconsistency and a lot of people did not recognize previously established intimacy. Also, decisions were rendered pointless: the Rachni queen was still alive even if you killed her, Shepard was still arrested, ect. and it was all because a lot of people that played the game didn't play the first, or second. I have a bad feeling about this...

Where are people getting this idea that decisions didn't matter as much as many players wanted them to because the developers wanted to appeal to new players?

Because it's moronic.

I guess it's because it's easier to pin their dislike of the implementations of past decisions on the decision to attract new players rather than face up to the fact that their expectations were always unrealistic.

I agree it's idiotic; a new player can't be invested one way or another in, for instance, the rachni, since he's never heard of them. There's nothing you can do for the new player except explain who the hell the rachni are, and Bio accomplished that very efficiently.
