My quipe was the "best place to start". Common sense dictates the best place to start a series is to do it with the very first part of it.

You don't start Star Wars with "Return of the Jedi", you don't start A Song of Ice and Fire with "Dance of the Dragons" and you don't start Lord of the Rings with "The Return of the King".

How for example would anyone care about the Krogan dilemma if they never played the first two games where it's explored. You can't get the same connection to the topic just by reading the Codex (and it's already a long stretch to think people that start a game series with the third iteration actually read the Codex).

Starting a series at any point that is not the beginning is OBVIOUSLY the worst and NOT the best thing to do.

What that marketing sentence actually says is "We don't care about our story's continued integrity and player immersion for as long as we get more sales".

Did anyone remember when a dev actually explained that statement?  I remember this came up and it was stated that ME3 contained some of the most refined elements of the series.  I mean really, if you look at ME1 and 2, a lot of elements were incredibly rough or just shoddy, and are noticeably improved with ME3.

Also, depending on what system you played on you had no choice.  PS3 fans HAD to start on ME2, missing out on all the minor decisions from ME1.  WiiU fans don't even get that, they HAVE to start and finish with ME3, with only the Genesis comics to save them.

I can certainly understand the reasoning behind the statement.  They consider ME3 to be their finest product with regards to the series.  It's accessible, allows for people new and old to play and still have a satisifying experience, without shutting out people who haven't touched ME1 or 2.  At the same time, it can also encourage people to go back and play the other games because of the system of save importing, with the draw of having your previous choices referenced back at you or used in moments of the narrative.

Actually hope for some kind of planet exploring like in mass effect 1, minus the badly controlled tank. It helped make the galaxy look bigger instead of just a bunch of small corridors with chest high walls.

lol.. I kind of liked the planet scanning. Something very Zen like about it.

Planet exploring in ME1 was similar too. Kind of relaxing.. just lots of environmental sounds, looking for mineral resources and such..

Funny you bring that up because I feel the same way. Though it had some issues it was still more enjoyable than the others.

They should simply stop trying to market their revenue and start market the product. People don't buy a game because it's supposedly great to jump into the franchise at that point. People don't buy the game because it will cater to longtime fans.

People buy games because they like whatever the game brings along. That means the universe, storyline, gameplay and other features.

They should say:
ME NG is a great game because it has a completely overhauled PC creation mechanic. This and that will result in that and those.

They should say:
ME NG is a great point to enter the franchise because it shares the same universe as the fabled Commander Shepard, but as a standalone game with its own unique story it does not require any explanation to fully immerse yourself in its story.

They should say:
With the use of Frostbite 3, the game will achieve significantly more eyecandy to make the universe more lively than ever.

This.

It worries me that they are more interested in marketing their revenue than the actual product. The hype/ comments on twitter are disconcerting. It just comes off like a con.

If a product is great, it will sell itself. It doesn't get any simpler. That's what they should be most concerned with. the hype will be generated by the fans/media themselves, so they as the developer won't have to...the fact they feel the need to is worrisome.

My problem with ME1 was that the economy was so broken fishing up more loot wasn't worth the time. In the sequels the stuff you recover is useful until the endgame

This is also true. Each game had its good and bad but I still miss the exploration of ME1.

Hell, even CDPR are using that line. It's PR speak, no more, no less.

I have a love/hate relationship with planet scanning. I don't particularly like all of it all that much, but I'm an absolute sucker for gathering points and resources, so I always drove off to the anomalies, probes and ore deposits in ME1 until just about every planet available was used up, and got well over 100-200K for everything but Eezo in ME2 on initial runs with a new Shepard, and I can't help myself but go from system to system and do one long session dodging reapers trying to get that planet or fuel depot wreck.

But in ME1, the Mako made it a lot more enjoyable for me, especially since there was a surprise thresher maw waiting for me in more than a couple of locations, which did add the enjoyable danger factor.

Translation: They will crack a few inside jokes, but the game will focus on bringing in fresh faces and getting newer fans comfortable in the Mass Effect world.

Last strawers will be angry, most new fans won't stick with it, most old fans will think it's okay. The game will still sell, and Bioware will go home happy.

True. Although I'm more inclined to take CDPR at its word.

Sounds like the same pitch that was made for Gears of War: Judgment.

That game sucked.

They obviously aren't going to come out and say "All you fans that have been here since ME1 are going to hate this game and only get further alienated"

Its what I am inclined to believe will happen, but they aren't going to say it.

Damn. I'd be more sad about this if Xbox wasn't dead to me. Oh well.

Good man. Expecting the worse is best mindset with BioWare.
