It's my favourite game of all time, yet one question still remains. It's been about two years since I last played the game (my reasoning being that you play it for the narrative, and there's a ton of dialogue, so forgetting half of it is what makes the thing enjoyable) and I'm currently replaying it now. For those who have not played the game, do not read the following paragraph.
We all know that the incarnations of TNO are basically innocent souls from the planes, that's why he loses his memory and even changes his personality from incarnation to incarnation. But is it ever explained as to why THIS incarnation has the ability to have his memories (and personality) intact?
Planescape: Torment question.

To be honest, that's not how I interpreted the situation. To me, all the previous incarnations were TNO, but he made different choices in all those different lives.
The fact that this incarnation was able to make it further then the others was a result of his choices and help of his companions (I always play as the good guy).

Thats how I see it too.

It's a good explanation, but it limits roleplaying. I usually played grey characters, so it wouldn't work for mine :-/

The fact that we can discuss these things and everyone is right demonstrates the game's awesomeness

Do you mean when he dies in game? Like, why isn't he back to square one? (Although I'd say Morte'd be mighty pissed if he kept dying every two seconds...) Because I don't know or can't remember if that's the case.
