Shepard was going to end up leaving Ashley for Miranda regardless in my canon. But her reaction to him really embittered him about her and the alliance. It grew into a nasty resentment of both her, the alliance, and the council. This is the point where Shepard simply see's Ashley as a problem that will have to be solved at some point in the future. He thinks that it's hilariously pathetic when she tries to restart the relationship again since Shepard is no longer with Cerberus (by circumstance. If they weren't indoctrinated, he'd leave the alliance for them in a second), and he gives her a massive "why you suck speech" in the hospital and leaves. That's just the beginning: it accumulates into her being killed by Miranda at a later point in the game during what is essentially a psychotic breakdown.

Yeah, I'm not even a Jackmancer and I think that is awesome. I wish I knew who the artist was. I've only seen it in reposts where the artist wasn't credited or linked to.
