(I never actually killed Fenris but bringing back characters who could have died in previous games is a bad idea.) On the bright side if Fenris doesn't show up in the next game maybe they can hire his voice actor for a different role. I hated just about everything about Fenris (contrived angst, anime look, some terribly written dialogue,) but *that voice!*

I'll never understand why people insists he looks "anime". He's illustrated in the same style as every other DA2 character. (I think people are confusing "pretty-boy" with anime...)

Sometimes, it isn't overexposure in the game so much as overexposure elsewhere, e.g. the forums. It's surprisingly easy for ambivalence or mild antipathy to turn into massive hatred in the face of excessive fan squeeage. This isn't unique to Fenris fans/anti-fans, of course. It can happen with any character in the game. People who have been turned off toward a character can usually avoid triggers by avoiding designated squee threads, but when the threads crop up too frequently or spill over into unrelated topics, it gets overwhelming.

Fenris has been one of the most hated characters in all of DA since I joined the forums in Fall '11. I have to assume that all this fan squeeage you're talking about took place before then, but it has pretty much stopped since then and has been confined to the Fenris thread. Occasionally he will come up in a "who's your favorite romance?" or "who would you like to see again?" thread, but so do all the other characters. He's usually on the lower end of fan polls.

People who hate certain characters or aspects of the game here on BSN just seem to have very intense, repressed feelings of hatred in general. I've never experienced that kind of intensity towards something like a video game. I mean I'm not a Morrigan fan, but I don't burst out complaining that I'm tired of having her crammed and stuffed down my throat. Because I'm not; she's just a video game character, and although I sighed when I saw her again, I just shrugged and went on with my life. (And certainly didn't enter any Morrigan-friendly threads to complain about her... what would that solve?)

But at this point you just expect hatred and vitriol when you start any thread on the BSN, especially a character thread. People are very bizarre... and I think in general just need to meditate more and perhaps get into yoga or tai chi....

Just to be clear, you're using the impersonal "you" here, right? My personal feelings about a Fenris cameo are more along the lines of "Meh. Pointless, but whatever," but that's pretty much my stance on *any* cameo that exists solely because fans expect it. Come up with some kind of a tie-in that makes the reappearance relevant and that changes everything. It doesn't have anything to do with affection for the character. I love Anders to pieces, but his story is over. Bringing him back just to say hi is pointless.

Maybe it's possible that people are just more sensitive about characters they feel strongly about? I'd like to think that was more the case than being seething puddles of hate. Case in point: Leliana, at least for me. I started out being mostly indifferent about her, but after 2 games, countless DLC, a bunch of book appearances, and considerable fan squee, I'm really, really sick of her. So, yeah, the thought of having her rammed down my throat again in DAI isn't good for my molars. Am I a volcano of vitreol because of this? I don't think so. I like just about everybody else just fine. I just had the bad luck to get turned off by a character who is literally impossible to avoid. Then again, these days I steer clear of any thread with her name in the title in hopes that I'll be able to recover enough by next year to tolerate her inevitable return with better grace.

And here I was expecting yet another Fenris Hate-Thread.
Honestly, as he's the only character in the whole franchise that I felt I could actually relate to and understand on a personal level, I always feel really uncomfortable whenever he's brought up in any discussion.
He's a well-written and realistically complex character.
If he returned for a side quest, a brief cameo, even a codex entry, I'd be satisfied. I have this ominous feeling in my toes that he won't, however. Fenris isn't a "fan favorite." He's an optional character with no impact on the plot of the second game and he isn't even mentioned once during the segments where Cassandra helpfully and sporadically mentions members of Hawke's party. He's not even in the demo. (Funny story about the demo. Apparently Gideon Emery slogged through nearly the entire thing until someone told him that Fenris wasn't in it.)

I liked Fenris, good buddy. We liked to spend our off time drinking wine and talking about how to clamp down on the mages. I did give him proper hell for smashing a perfectly good bottle of wine against the wall though. We then went to the top of the highest tower in Denerim and had a bow shooting competition at bottles. I let him win.

Some of his more rabid fans have called those who are not into him....idiots and other not so nice terms. I've had the character shoved down my throat enough to last me two more games.

I love Fenris (he's all but one of my Hawke's LI), but I would be fine with him not making a cameo if it didn't feel organic to the plot, or if he only cameo'd should you have sent him back to Danarius (ouch!) assuming we get to go to Tevinter.

A character with huge sword and emo personality to appeal to JRPG crowd?

How about instead of "anime" I say that Fenris looks like a character out of a Japanese RPG or Devil May Cry style game? White feathered hair, scrawny build, pretty face, giant sword. It seems like a pretty recognizable look to me. Plus he has glowy magical stuff that makes him fight better with his giant sword, something I'd associate with one of those silly shonen jump anime's like Bleach or a ton of JRPG characters.

Edit: It's also not a knock against anime or JRPGs. If there was a guy in DA2 who had a muscular Charles Atlas build, short hair and really tight clothes who fought by punching people I'd be asking what this super hero comic character was doing in this high fantasy setting. It would seem equally jarring and out of place.

Whoa, that would be ironic. It would make a lot of sense for story reasons, and might lead to some truly heartbreaking discoveries (Has Danarius tampered with his mind again? Does he remember being free? Can you help him escape again?), but that kind of return would probably not go over well with the people who most want him back.  Those who want to see him would not have any saved games where he was given over to Danarius and those who don't want to see him again would have to. Doesn't sound ideal. That said, it is a good hook to bring him into DAI... if anybody has a save that would work. I don't.

@Mecla36: Wow, that kind of thing should not happen to anyone! If somebody is calling you an idiot over a video game character, you should hit the "report" button on their post. I know, nobody wants to cause trouble, but that's totally out of line.

I love Fenris to death and would also like to know what happens to him. However, considering David's implications here:

What effects the lyrium would have on Fenris is completely up in the air. Fenris was a test case by Danarius, the first of his kind, so anything can happen ... . It may make him crazy, may give him added powers, we don’t know. Also, since Danarius isn’t around anymore to “maintain” the lyrium (Gaider’s word), it could become unstable. Gaider imagines lyrium like mercury.

I like cameos, but this is the one thing about Fenris that does make me interested in seeing where he ends up in the future more than, say, Merrill or Aveline.

If the lyrium would drive him crazy, I can accept that a reason for him to show up without a Hawke he romanced - I mean, he's already a prooven flight risk, I can see it as part of his character that if he started going crazy he would abandon Hawke in an attempt to spare him/her the pain of being with him like this. Though I didnt romance him in my main playthrough so maybe people who did would be outraged by that.

ALL the warriors in DA2 have giant swords should they choose two-handed, even your Hawke. I guess all two handed warriors are anime.

All the elves have skinny/slim/trim/effeminate builds. I guess elves are anime.

Should you pick the white hair option in your character creation for Hawke - I guess your Hawke is anime

Anders glows. I guess he's anime.

I just think he looks odd in an Western RPG game.

Yes but do you go into Leliana friendly threads (or any thread) and say, "I hate that stupid girly-girly French b-i-t-c-h; I'm sick and tired of BW and their EA overlords shoving her tarty arse down my throat."

No, you don't, and that is the difference

I'm not even saying that Fenris is a bad thing to Dragon Age, I actually like him. All I am saying is that Fenris is indeed the typical character from a JRPG game (It came to my mind just by talking to him the first time).

I don't see it. He looks like a dragon age elf to me.

Until they give him giant, crazy hair, remove his nose, trade in his great sword for a katana, animate solely the background behind him as he flies through the air, dress him in either a samurai outfit or a track suit, and replace all his combat sounds with kung-fu grunts - I don't see how he's an anime or jrpg character.

But hey that's just me...
