Generally speaking, your ease of handling waves 8&9 is the best indicator. Silver waves 8&9 are a norm for Gold. Gold waves 8&9 are the norm for Platinum.

So the real question is, how much Gel/missiles/ops are your burring to get through silver waves 8&9? None? Then head to gold.

I think some of you may have misunderstood my query... I'm mostly playing gold already but only with the more 'OP' kits like the TGI. I thought completing a silver solo with a less 'OP' kit would be a good indication that I could use that kit successfully on gold. I realize I'm probably just worrying too much about the poor bloke (or girl) that has to carry me if it doesn't work out.

Anyway,I took some of your advice and jumped straight in to some games last night with the Batarian Slasher I just unlocked. A couple of bad matches but then a couple of good ones. So thanks to everyone that has taken the time to help me out. My confidence is certainly rising. Really appreciate it.

@Lancecucumber, I'm definitely interested in getting some more games in with you, maybe even try a duo

Gold is about situational awareness and gear.
I'd say you're ready. Just be aware that soloing gold is significantly more difficult than silver- if you get stuck in a bad PUG thats what you'll end up doing.
