I'm posting a little release announcement on behalf of this module because it seems to have been missed from the front page announcements on the Vault.  I don't see it in the front page news going back to April, when it was released.  It had an update recently, which is how I learned of it.

I also see that it was uploaded to the new Vault around the same time as it was updated on the Vault, but there it seems lost in a flood of file migration updates in the Recent Content list.

I don't know if the author visits these forums, so best to leave any comments you may have to the module's page on the Vault, or the new Vault, where there are currently none.

The Spire of Malice, Chapter 1: The Red Father
by coercer.angra

After receiving a letter from three renowned mages, you have been invited to explore the legendary ruin, Altheha Eigi, which is said to be the site  of The First Atrocity -- a horrific event whose details have been lost to history that modern scholars often refer to as "The Fall". Over seven billion died there in a thirty three day siege with three great witches known as the Mothers: Suspiria, Lachrymosa, and Tenebrae. As it happens, you are the most prominent researcher in the field on this very place and subject, although like everyone else -- you've never set foot inside, since the spire been bound shut and sealed for nearly 1000 years.

Except, the letter says, that that's not quite true now.  The door is . . . open.  Inexplicably.  Won't you come inside?

It is known that the Spire was finally sealed, but not destroyed - because any harm acted against it only made it stronger.  And those who entered were driven mad.

Are you ready to confront the demons that live within yourself? You have plenty of them, we assure you.  Like your father, the Murderer of Lev.

Evil never sleeps for long.

Disclaimer: I have not played this.

Maybe one day someone will actually be able to complete this mod & then they'll leave a comment.

I was just looking at this module and the link on the IGN vault to the two required hak packs is broken so whoever wants to play it can't unless they already have the haks installed. A bit daft to spend all that time making a module and not having all the required files available on the main page or making a module specific hak it can't help with encouragement to play. The new vault however has the link working so well done to Mr Kipp and co.

It looks like the link for those haks should actually be to here.  I already have those haks, so I didn't notice there was a problem there.  Personally, what you describe is also my own preference -- to have just a single hak for each module containing all required content.

Is the above reason why completing it is impossible, or is there some other reason?  In any case, that's the sort of information that would be helpful as a comment on the module's page, where the author would be more likely to see it.

Dunno if it's the case, but it looks like some people are trying to play it at level 1, when the module's description clearly states that it's for characters of level 10-12.

I don't know which description your reading, but the one on the vault says
"(1) LEVEL. The game spans from level 1 and concludes somewhere between levels 10 and 12, depending on how much optional material you choose to play"

There's an easy option which takes you to level 5 near the start & gives you a item that supposedly makes the mod easier, I think you would be doing well to get through it starting at level 12.
It is the only mod I have ever quit just because it was far too hard.

Never mind; I was thinking of The Church of Stone (which is 10-14, actually).

Rolo left a note on my newsfeed saying he fixed the link on the Vault page.

I see Karen left fair comment on the mod, (it's ridiculously hard & or very buggy)
only to get berated by some tossa who rated it 9.5 (presumably because he liked the music)
But it seems the modder likes it the way it is & doesn't care if no one else does.

I saw that too, and reported it to Rolo. I was a bit disappointed that he left the personal attacks in the first comment standing, and only removed the specific profanity. I don't think personal attacks deserve a voice on any forum.

I did see that the author has apparently taken the criticism of the difficulty seriously, and announced a rebalanced version to come out next month.

Edit: Actually, it's apparently out now, on Neverwintervault.org.

Quote:
I designed this game to be quite challenging.  Not all players will enjoy such a challenge, but I felt that old-school pnp style dungeons were somewhat lacking on the vaults and I wanted this game to partially fill that gap.  Nonetheless, version 2.0 has seen a precipitous drop in the difficulty of the game.  See Revision History at the bottom for more details.

"and what's so great about the modding community - you don't have to market to a wide audience, but can cater to a specialized group of people."

Bet you wish you hadn't advertised this mod with comments like this from the author ! He/she sounds like a right little charmer.

Well, I can at least hide behind my disclaimer that I haven't actually played the mod, and that all I knew was that it hadn't gotten its release announcement.

That wasn't meant to be snide in any way.  I just meant you can make a niche game that may only appeal to a very few people, since you're not trying to sell it.  In the case of this particular game, it may well appeal to none other than its creator, and that's ok - I had a lot of fun making it and I learned a huge amount about making games in general.  I especially learned what not to do in the future!

Unfortunately, I fell quite ill shortly after the early release of the module and wasn't able to bring it to proper completion (and obviously never will now); I'm just now back on my feet and quite happy to be alive :).

I got a very strange message from vault II when I followed the link :(

It is funny though ... it's "page not found" with benefits :D

Looks like the URL changed slightly at some point.
