Ok, for those who are interested! ...for my latest playthrough I'm playing a two-handed sword wielding Templar! The idea being to have approximately 84% spell resistance with the Knight Commander's Armor, Spellward, 10% dweomer rune & key to the city, then doing big hits with Starfang! I'm going for a very economical playthrough in terms of cash, by using Shale, Leliana & Morrigan all the way through as they can basically pick up all the gear they need from random drops, making sure to head to Cadash towards the end so as to get several brilliant crystals for Shale!

I've currently reached level 12 and its pretty easy going so far, though I haven't actually completed anything relating to the blight and could happily return to Lothering! By completing as many side-quests as possible first, I've been able to buy Spellward and am now sitting on 74% spell resist which is proving very handy!

My general levelling / quest progress has been:

1) Increase strength to 42, then distribute points between willpower, dexterity & constitution in an appoximate 3:2:1 ratio! Gaining access to the Blood-dragon plate as soon as possible really makes the first part easy, and I wore this until I could afford the Knight Commander Plate which was my first item purchase at 27+ sovereigns

2) fill in the 2h weapon talent tree to get critical strike as soon as possible first picking up sunder arms before taking Templar specialization at level 7. Then picking up the first two Templar talents before picking up sunder armor at level 10. The aim being to take Berserker as a second specialization at level 14, going straight for Final Blow (hence the willpower investment)

3) After Lothering, I was able to buy Bergan's Honor before heading straight to Denerim to start picking up side quests completing as much before travelling around the local area map then heading off to do the Stone Prisoner DLC then Warden's Keep. After that I headed to Orzamarr to get the Key to the City ring before heading to Redcliffe to kill the undead. With Redcliffe clear I could get access to all the Chanter's Board, Blackstone Irregulars & Mages Collective side-quests. Taking one rank of pickpocket allows access to all the Slim Cauldry quests, which though I was unable to pick any of the pockets myself, Leliana (with a nice reputation earned bonus to cunning) was able to do without problems! There's quite a lot of travelling around to do all the different side-quests, especially the Favor's for Interested Parties, however it's all very profitable and has given me the money to get Knight Commander's Plate & Spellward.

...anyway that's basically taken me to level 12 with no actual progression of the main plot! Next I'm going to be heading off to Orzamarr again to kill off Jarvia and have some Informal Training Opportunities in the proving grounds! Then with 40 sovereigns buy up some Lyrium to take to the Mage's Tower (gather side quests before the main quest = time efficiency!)....

...so, thanks for having a read...enjoy...krs

Then the only way to go at this is to use the Templar armor, and the Helmet of Duty! That's what REAL Templars wear.

krsboss. Your idea looks very interesting think I will try it next time, I hope that you will continue to add to this thread so that I can follow your progress. BTW how many backpacks have you bought the price seems to increase each time 4G at the Circle Tower really pisses me off.

The OP says that he can "happily return to Lothring." Since I was under the impression that once you left Lothring and everything disappeared due to the Blight overrun, how can you go back to a functioning Lothring as implied?

Thanks.

As long as you don't 'complete' any of the main questline (Circle tower, Forrest etc), lothering will not be 'blighted' hehe :)

..the first item I bought, as soon as arriving in Ostagar, was a backpack off the quartermaster for 57 silver. Once you return from the wilds and it's gotten dark (when you return with darkspawn blood vials & treaties) you can buy a second backpack for 57 silver. I then bought the backpack from Bodahn for ~5 sovereigns.

90 inventory is good enough for the most part as I'm using the 'party' storage chest in Warden's Keep to keep anything I don't want to sell! Before heading to a dungeon run, I'll drop off anything I'm not going to need along the way (spare gifts, miscellaneous armor/weapons) and get my inventory down to ~30 or so. I'll buy another backpack soon, but atm, I'm scraping together enough money to buy the Lyrium to take to the castle tower...with my next main purchase to be Anduril's Blessing belt!

That with Luck Stone is like leveling up 6 levels wihtout the talent points.  It's well worth it.  Building up 106 gold is the tough part so early in the game.

I'm doing Templar myself, but I'm going with Weapon & Shield.  Is there anywhere you can learn Templar abilities to unlock it?  I know you can buy it in camp, but is there anywhere else?  I want to get Templar then go into the Circle of Magi.

I'm putting all points into Strength like you are atm.  I'm only in Ostogar right now collecting the vials of blood.

This is amazing, can you give any tips on how you made your money and what quest(if you did them) for cash?

If you get enough rep with Alastair he will teach you to become Templar!

...most of my money has been made from carrying out all the side-quests, the 'Favors for Interested Parties' from the barman in Denerim can be very profitable and don't involve much fighting. Also by taking one rank of Pickpocket you can do all the Slim-Cauldry crime-wave quests, using Leliana's pick-pocketing skill to do the actual robbery! Possibly the hardest Favor's quest to complete early is the 'Negotion Aids' quest as you need to find 10 Garnets. These are mostly random drops, which I got very lucky with, however the 'Master Tilver' mark will yeild 5 garnets, and if you are still pushed, you can head to the depth's of the Brecillian Ruins where the Arcane Horror before you descend to the lowest level will drop 3 more!

Heading to Redcliffe and killing off the undead early on also allows access to the blackstone irregulars / mage's collective / chanters board there. This means that when you head around Denerim for the Chanter's board quests you can also complete other side-quests very efficiently!

Using crafted health poultices and setting up Morrigan with heals (before/if you go with Wynne) also saves a lot of money early on. The Dalish camp sells infinite elfroot at 60 copper and the cheapest flasks are available for 1 silver in Orzammarr if you can intimidate the thug's in Figor's Imports! ...so any lesser health poultice you can buy for less than 1 silver 60 will save you money...in other words it's really only worth crafting health poultices upwards!

...otherwise just be really economical, don't buy something unless it's an end-game item or needed for crafting!

...gloves of diligence are possibly the best you can get, and you can obtain them without a fight (locked chest in the Shaperate, Orzamarr)...I'm using Bergen's Honor helmet though mostly because it looks pretty sweet with the Knight Commander's Plate...atm, I'm using Juggernaught boots, however will upgrade to Cadash Stompers after Orzamarr!

There is a Knight Commander Helm, available from Cesar's special stock (available after the Trial of the Crow's) and also a Knight Commaner's Shield obtainable completing the 'Something Wicked' side-quest in the Elven Alienage...however no combination of these items gives a set bonus :(

@krsboss, you do know that dwarves get a built in 10% spell resistance, which would have given your character 94% spell resistance with the gear you mentioned in your first post? And that if you had been a noble dwarf, Gorim buys things at twice what any other merchant in the game pays?

Allistar unlocked Templar for me so that worked out good.

Basically I just left Lothering after reaching lvl 7.  So now I am a Templar and I wanna try to build some gold up.

Currently:

Full Dragon Armour Set
Oathkeeper
Havard's Aegis Shield
Waden's Oath
Lucky Stone

- I wanna get the Ring of Ages as soon as possible.  I only need around 79 gold.  I usually hold off on buying weapons or shields becasue you can pretty much find most of the good stuff.  Also being so early in game I'm not too worried about it becasue the Dragon Armour set is plenty good.

With the strength boosts I'm at 42 I think (38 without).  I pumped nothing but strength points in sense the start.  Now I'm gonna start increasing Dex and Constitution.

I would like to get Ring of Ages, then I wanna hit CIrcle of Magi to start the main storyline quest.  That way I can get the attribute bonues in the Fade as soon as possible.  I'm currently in Denerim but I may bounce around doing side quests to try and get gold built up.  I may get Shale right away too and do Warden's Peak.

Team:
PC - Warrior (Templar)
Morrigan
Leliana
Allistar

- I'm changing Leliana to 2 handed fighter.  Most likely I'll get rid of her once I get Wynne.  Also I may use Shale instead of Allistar.  I'm playing on "Hard", but it kinda feels like normal atm.

No, I immediately have the breast plate (body section) in my inventory just like the Lucky Stone.  The other parts I bought at Party Camp.  They are fairly inexpensive.

I almost have enough gold for Ring of Ages.  After I get that I'm gonna start the main attack of the storyline.  Cicle of Magi first.  I almost have everyhting unlocked in Shield and Armour category.  I have the 2 left that require lvl 12.

So far my Templar build is coming out pretty sweet.  Even on Hard setting I can take on crowds and easily come out of it.  I have Ring of Ages now too and I'm currently in the Circle of Magi in the Fade section.  I'm on lvl 11 atm I think.  Once I hit 12 I'll be able to unlock the rest of my abilities.

Plus I have Wynne now so it's really going smoothly.

I presume he's talking about Blood Dragon Plate...not any line of Wades!

Just a thought, How exactly does Spell resist work with elemental resists, do they stack?

Spell resist is different to elemental resist. From what I can tell spell resist is checked first and this is a straight % check...as there are no spell penetration type talents, it appears to be 1d100 vs. %spell resist. If your spell resistance is greater than the % rolled, you resist the spell completely.

Elemental resistances are a % immunity, so 100 = 100% = total resistance. 90% flame resistance means you will take 10 damage from a fire effect that damaged you for 100!

Worth noting is that elemental resistances all cap at 75%, so you can never be completely immune to them. Spell resistance, however, seems to go all the way to 100 (which is possible with Knight Commander's Plate, Spellward, Key to the City, and a 3-rune slotted weapon containing 1 GM Dweomer Rune and 2 Master ones -- and if you're a dwarf then you get a 10% boost for free). I have Alistair completely immune to magic on one of my play throughs. Makes him the ultimate tank.

Thanks for the clarification, honestly thought they were both the same and capped at 75%
